Pixel 2016 - Sailfish or Marlin?

Re: Nexus 2016 - Sailfish or Marlin?

I'm kind of digging that render, what a weird looking phone. Reminds of my Nexus 4 and it's weird disco ball back-side (still my favorite phone I've ever had). I'd buy the larger one for sure... Wish it was available now. My '14 moto x got clunky so fast, I barely got a year out of it before I wanted to dump it, almost 2 years in now and I hate the thing... So close to buying a oneplus 3, but I should probably wait for this

Re: Exclusive: this is what the 2016 Nexus phones, Sailfish and Marlin, will look like

I'll say one thing.

THOSE TOP AND BOTTOM BEZELS!

Seriously, if this is the actual design, given that Google has been exercising more design influence, they seriously have to start trimming those down someday, even if it means having to make the phone slightly thicker to have slimmer bezels but with the same battery capacity.

Re: Exclusive: this is what the 2016 Nexus phones, Sailfish and Marlin, will look like

I will hold judgment until an actual render leaks. Not a huge fan of them so far, and with the specs, not really that impressive compared to what is already out.

That's the state we're in... there's little left to gain from generation to generation, so get used to incremental gains on phones across the board.

The thing is, other than stock android what does a nexus offer over other android devices? Samsung and others have better cameras, I mean if all you care about is updates than yes Nexus all the way, but other than that, they come out later than other flagships with same or lesser specs.

Re: Nexus 2016 - Sailfish or Marlin?

After my N6 I wouldn't mind something smaller. I would like to go for the 5inch one, but I'm afraid battery life will be poor.

How is the battery life of n6? I'm interesting in N6 but my friends say the battery life of n6 is bad

That's a huge thing though. The best running phones I've owned have a Nexus tramp stamp on the back. Google doesn't forget they exist once the next gen goes on sale, and I'll get OS and security updates lickity split.

Out of the box, they might not have the same software features, but there's not much I can't add either via an app or a mod.

As for the camera... My wife's S7 has nothing on my 6P. In fact, when she uses the pictures in albums, she prefers the shots from my Nexus. They look more natural and don't look processed when you blow them up a bit. The S7 focuses like a grad student hopped up on Adderall, which is why I got it for her, but quality wise, it's a wash.

So while these phones will have hw specs on par with the other phones... They'll run better, be supported longer and easier, and for probably a fair bit less money. Unless something changes drastically, I won't be buying anything but a Nexus for my own use.

For most, they don't even know what stock is. For the tech crowd, yeah it is huge, but other than that crowd, I wouldn't say stock is huge.

There's pricing. Nexus devices are usually a couple hundred less than Sammy, LG, and other mainstream manufacturers on flagship devices.. Comparable quality, hardware and specs. Yes, including the camera now.

Re: Nexus 2016 - Sailfish or Marlin?

The form factor of the old N7 was pretty nice but I found my old N7 to be completely unusable, everything is excruciatingly slow, so I'm thinking that if there is a new N7 at a $300 price point I might get one, if it's more then that I won't bother.
If you want a worthy successor to the Nexus 7, look no further: https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-940-8...ag=hawk-future-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU5256418
The price/performance of this device outweighs anything they're likely to release, and it's received great reviews.

I could see pricing, but once again, most consumers till buy phones on "payment plans" so pricing is out the window when you look at it in that regard.

An Android experience that's not corrupted by a slew of manufacturer and carrier bloatware.

Re: Nexus 2016 - Sailfish or Marlin?

Things changed a lot last year from the rumors to the final release... I ended up with the 6P because it was that much better then the 5X. I'd like to upgrade again this year to the latest Nexus. If Huawei would have produced both last year, and they would have made them with the same material, I would have preferred the smaller size factor but I'm very happy with my choice.

I will wait for the official announcement before making my final choice.

Re: Nexus 2016 - Sailfish or Marlin?

Yeah no idea what the deal is with the extra large glass pane. IMO it looks pretty average/ugly. Certainly not as nice as the HTC 10, either on the front or back.

I thought the glass strip on the Huawei Nexus 6P was strange, but this is taking it to the extreme. Not sure why 40% of the back is a glass (or maybe even plastic) panel. If that's Google taking control over their design language, then.... =/

Hopefully this was an early prototype or something and the final device will look better.
This is an HTC A9 and it looks like they cut the back out to accommodate the fingerprint scanner and flush camera(and maybe other reasons as well, such as different internal configuration). But this is clearly the frame of the HTC A9, which is the best looking phone there is, in my opinion. So clearly HTC had many A9 frames to spare, and could probably easily recalibrate manufacturing equipment to make a bigger frame of the same kind.

But, yeah, they definitely uglied up the back.

Re: Nexus 2016 - Sailfish or Marlin?

I'm leaning towards the sailfish model too.

Isn't that the "stock Android" bring referred to? :)

Seems like not corrupted by bloatware might be true of almost all sold unlocked phones.

I suppose so :)

Not necessarily. My first smartphone was an unlocked HTC Sensation 4G. It was riddled with HTC and TMO bloatware and customization.

You're right; I meant direct from carrier unlocked but there are many unlocked devices that are sold by carriers that have lots of garbage on them.

Re: Nexus 2016 - Sailfish or Marlin?

I'm still waiting to see if Huawei comes out with anything. If they don't, I'll likely pick up the Marlin.
