Pixel 3 vs. dSLR

Hey Mike, got a Pentax K1 (original or MKII) I could, ummm... "borrow?"

No....I only have Minolta or Sony DSLR equipment because Sony bought out Konica Minolta for their A mount.
I also have some Minolta and Canon film cameras laying around. I hear film is making a comeback...lol

Yeah yeah....but that's what people refer to them as. No one usually comes here and draws the comparison between mirrorless and smart devices or distinguishes between DSLR and mirrorless in this forum. The NEX series take great pictures. Very close to my DSLRs....I have seven of them and about 30 lenses.
In any event it silly to compare a DSLR to cell camera but I think the point of this thread is to show that the Pixel can replace the need to carry one. Of course not for pixel peepers who insist on lugging around bulky equipment. I like to think of cell phones as great for taking snapshots and semipro equipment as great for taking photographs.

I appreciate the clarification. I have not invested in a mirrorless system yet. I have a Nikon DX and still wish I had a full frame. My 70-200 2.8 lens is (FF) is my absolute favorite, and I have carried it around Disney more than once.

More and more though, I find myself using my phone. I don't have the time I used to have to allow me to do much more than snap shots. Still, the pixel camera cannot compare to the shots I get with the lens above when I take my time to shoot portraits, shoot my daughter doing ballet in a theater, or my son doing outdoor sports.

Actually there are a lot of film users. Include myself (though disclaimer I haven’t shot film in 3 1/2 years. Retired and moved to the Philippines in 2015 and it’s extremely difficult to get film here. :-p)

I still have a Canon A2 (35 mm film and was a major work horse of mine for many years in the 80s and early 90s) with a handful of lenses. Also I have a Sinar P (large format 4x5 film) with a handful of lenses and a Bronica SQ-B (medium format film, 120/220 and I use 6x6 film holders) also with a handful of lenses.
Digital consist of a Canon 30D and a EOS 5D M2 and as usual several lenses, a Sony NEX (lenses of course) and the already mentioned Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark ii and it’s my work horse now.
I basically abandoned the Sony line of MILCs because the lack of native lenses for it.

I haven’t used the Canons in a long, long time and also haven’t used the Sony in over 4 years.

I seldom use my phone for anything except sometimes a little digi-snap here and there.

I’ll sell the unused cams and gear soon. No use having it just consume space. :-p

Exactly...when you're at events like you mention for your kids sometimes the phone is not enough

Can't you get someone to ship it you?

Oh yes, and I can buy online. Several problems and hassles though. Shipping cost and customs fees would about double the price of the film. Next is the shipping time and heat during that time. Another hassle/problem, is getting it processed. I had thought about dong it myself here but climate control and a dark room is just too much to do here. So, bottom line, it is what it is, so digital only now. :-p. Not my fav, but that’s ok. No use fighting it too much. :)

Getting back on topic, I was looking over the Pixel 3 specs, and I couldn't find any references to a manual mode for the camera. So is it safe to say that doesn't exist? If so, then no way you can compare it to a DSLR, and shots like these would be impossible.

These shots, btw, were actually taken on my V20. I'd say it's likely a closer comparison to a DSLR. I can also save raw files.IMG_20160427_191545.jpeg0504172301.jpeg1027162341.jpeg

As far as I know it's not possible with the stock camera app, but there are a bunch of third party app that let you take manual control of the pixel sensor.

Nice pics btw. would be interesting to see what the Pixel low light could do for light painting...

No manual mode but you can shoot RAW.
You can still compare it to a DSLR as far as quality of the photos but you're not going to be able to compare shots that require manual modes to capture a specific effect. I don't think the OP was trying to draw that specific comparison.
In the end we know that you can't replace a DSLR with a cell phone but we can minimize the need to use a DSLR when it's not convenient or prohibited.

Pixel 3 takes great shots.....for a phone.

If you're serious about photography and want to take stunning shots, no question a DSLR will run circles around the Pixel or any smartphone.

Truth.. As it should. Now, when a DSLR can make a phone call and surf the internet, then maybe we can have a different discussion. But for now, DSLR, is dedicated to photography only and should obviously be on top.
