Pixel 3 XL Unboxing Video (Leak)

I hear that, but why? Why do that? Why run off potential customers? Why are they copying Apple and doing it poorly?

Because real world consumers do not care about a 2% change in battery capacity and some of them do care about wireless charging, now that iPhones have it, so that's an obvious trade that every OEM would choose the same way. It's very easy for us to fall into the trap of thinking that because we in the forums like or dislike something, that the market in general feels a similar way. It usually doesn't.

To me it seems like you're looking at the 2% battery capacity reduction as if it is catastrophic, when really it's still likely to be a net increase in battery life with an obvious value add in the form of the convenience of wireless charging. The below is contrasting how I would try to explain the OEM's reasoning with my interpretation (hopefully I didn't get it wrong) of your comments.

To me it seems like you're also looking at the notch as if it's defacing the device, even though it is adding more utility to the device. Most consumers are going to be in favor of gaining more screen real estate, just like they're in favor of gaining wireless charging functionality. The only way with current tech to add that additional screen real estate to the top portion of the device is with a notch. Essential, Apple, Google, LG, OnePlus, etc. all realize that and that's why the current generation of phones all took that path.

The Note 9 took another path, which is to minimize the top bezels. The display is 5.76" tall, but the top 50ish pixels are being used for notifications, meaning in most usage, the usable area of the device is slightly shorter than the 5.76". The usage of a notch to remove the notifications and status icons from the usable space increases the amount of space usable by content, all other things being equal. It's the same idea as the LG V series' 2nd screen they tried a couple times, just cleaner.

The Pixel 3 XL is basically a Pixel 2 XL with an upgraded processor, a newer generation display, more screen real estate and wireless charging added in.

But the issue is that 3520 mAh is not enough for me as it is. Better processes may equal a little better battery but larger display will also equal a little less battery. So for me it is more of a loss of 570 mAh decrease from the Note 9 that is a 16% decrease in battery over my other options.

Also I am not seeing the extra usable space, without a sample in my hand to measure I can't say exactly, however in the photo below the highlighted area is wasted. From the bottom of the notch to the bottom of the screen is usable space IMO.

I am happy if wireless charging does come with this and that will help on most days, however days away from power it might be an issue.

Here's the comparison of the Pixel 2 XL next to the Pixel 3 XL, then the same picture with colored rectangles indicating usable display area and finally those two rectangles on top of each other. Values are approximations based on the photographs, could vary some in real dimensions but the proportions would be identical.

usable display area.jpg

The Pixel 3 XL, left most and purple, adds a quarter of an inch of height to the usable area by getting notifications moved up to the top. It's only about 5% more height, but the usable area of the Pixel 2 XL, right most and green, is 14.75 sq in while the usable area of the Pixel 3 XL is 15.43 sq in, meaning that 5% additional height, a mere quarter inch, is adding 2/3 sq in of area. It also gives the P3 XL an effective display size (diagonal) of 6.15" compared to the 5.94" effective display size of the P2XL.

The P3 XL is literally a Pixel 2 XL with an upgraded processor, a newer generation display, 5% more usable screen real estate and wireless charging added in.

Yeah I don't think anyone is going to claim that the Pixel 3 XL is going to be a battery life upgrade over the Note 9 unless that is actually observed once it releases. I don't think it likely, I think they'll be about the same.

It is important to note the distinction between mAh and battery life, because that's never been a 1:1.

I think the argument being made is that 3430 is going to produce approximately the same or better battery life as 3520 - which is obvious because they're 98% the same number anyways, and that's prior to the hardware and software performance gains.

Thats a lot of work... if the screen is 6.2 vs 6.7 vs something else. I will wait to make my choice just saying that so far I am not happy... Plus by the time you can get the Pixel 3 line the Note 9 prices will drop.

From looking at the pictures full screen you tube and app as such will be about the same screen area on both the 2XL vs the 3XL

Based on my usage, days away from power are a dilemma for any phone unless it's just on standby. I know because I had a 10,000 extended battery for my V20. That's where power packs come in.

I'll be frank.....if the Note 9 was part of my vocabulary I would buy that instead of the Pixel 3XL or any other phone especially if a big battery was part of the equation. For me the Note 9 might as well not exist. Not because it's inferior or a bad product....quite the opposite. It's just not my cup of tea. In fact if I were to go Samsung I would prefer the S series and add an extended battery pack.

I want to stay on the Pixel line, but I also want to be happy. I had the Note 8 and got the Pixel 2XL and was going to alternate, however I fell in love the the 2XL and never went back. I do miss some Sammy/Note stuff (wireless charging, S-Pen, Compatibility with my Gear, and Spay), but still love the Pixel line, just not going to reward a step backwards (IMO) with my money.

I hear you....my only regret was judging the original Pixel due to big bezels and looking like an iPhone. At the time I was hooked on LG and the Quad DAC, but I've since learned how to get great audio out of any phone. At the time also phone cameras were trash in my eyes being I was a DSLR snob. The Pixel changed that for me. As far as I'm concerned it's the best camera. Some others are very close but I like it's results and when I bundle it with software experience I can't look at anything else. I do wish the camera had some manual controls but for the most part auto gets it right.

If you do the same thing 365 days a year, you're set.

If, however, you're like everyone else, sometimes you have days where you're out and away from a charger. And I bet you might appreciate a larger battery. But hey, that's just me.

Usually yes. But the main take away of my reply was that if you're going to make s**t up, 100% isn't a good number to use to prove it.

In the same boat at you.

I guess my issue is that there is literally nothing interesting or exiting about the Pixel 3 devices. No new software perks or tricks that we know of based on the Russian leaks.

On a hardware front, it's got 2017 specs (except for the processor) and seems to have the same software experience I have now on the Pixel 2XL, so I'm questioning why would I 'upgrade' to the new Pixels? To take better selfies? I don't take selfies. I'm sure the 3XL's in the Russian leaks weren't final software, but there really wasn't anything new at all, even for testing, other than a tweaked camera app.

So I'm still going to wait for the official reveal and I hope there's a lot more to the phone than what we already know.
