Marques Brownlee takes the 16 latest smartphones, shoots a collection of different scenes and conditions, posts the photos on Instagram, and asks the public to vote on the best shots. The contest is a single elimination bracket format.

The amazing thing is the Pixel 5a was pitted against the Pixel 6 Pro in the first round and beat it. The second round didn't get any easier as it had the 5a going up against iPhone 13 Pro. Pixel 5a beat the iPhone to advance to the next bracket.

Eventually the Pixel 5a won the whole shooting match.

Yeah I saw that and of course it's all subjective but shows you that most phones from the last 2-3 years are more than capable of taking a good photo which is awesome to see.

It's getting to the point where performance specs don't matter as much because of diminishing returns and even mid range phones are catching up in terms of performance. Companies are probably going to have to differentiate themselves with software features.

All good for us and I suspect prices will continue to drop especially after the pixel 6 aggressive pricing. I think the next thing will be foldable phones.

Yeah it was an excellent video

It was a fun comparison video, but of course it was entirely subjective. Amateurs almost always choose the brightest image regardless of photographic quality. Coming from a 3XL to my 6Pro, I'm not seeing a dramatic difference in my images. All Pixels have excellent Point and Shoot cameras. I've found a lot of use for my 6 Pro's remarkable 4X telephoto.

Seeing this video enforced my decision to keep the smaller Pixel 6 over the pro. Because if the 5a can win a camera battle it kind of proves that buying top tier is not always needed to get good camera results.

Pixel 4XL or other?

Pixel 4XL of other?

Same locations (off a few feet) one taken with a Pixel 4XL, the other with a Nikon D850, NIKKOR AF-S 24-70 F/2.8G EDIF ZOOM; and yes, different times of the year.

But I agree, phone cameras have come a long way and hard to tell one from another. But I do believe there is more to the pro than just an extra camera.
