Pixel & Pixel XL Pricing Rumors

Good points made by Aquila, but do all the improvements add up to the rumored price of $649 versus the 5X at $399? Some of the upgraded hardware is tech improvements that don't cost significantly more than the old tech cost a year ago. Others are incremental that may cost $20-$50 more than what was on the 5X. I just don't see $250 worth of extra value in this phone. Maybe $100 or $150 max.

I can't say if the value is worth it to you or not. I can say that I don't think the pricing history of Nexus phones has anything to do with their strategy on Pixel phones.

Since I'm critical of the new pricing, then it's not for me. But you are on the mark with this being a change in the Google pricing strategy. Also the marketing strategy. Hence the rebranding to Pixel.

There isn't enough information out there to say whether the phone is worth the money or not. The specs list isn't going to tell you everything. For example, if you looked at the specs, you would think that the Galaxy S7 camera isn't any better than several other flagship cameras with similar specs, but it is. Knowing the display specs won't tell you whether the display is calibrated well for color accuracy. So on and so forth.

In terms of pricing strategy, it always hasn't been "cheap".

Galaxy Nexus wasn't either. But not really sure it matters, because Nexus and Pixel phones aren't related.

All of which are phones built with cheap materials and not great construction.

The nexus 4 is made of gorilla glass on front and hardened glass on back. Many recent phones that are considered to have premium build are made of glass.

There's nothing inherently wrong with plastic phones which can be more durable than metal phones.

Nothing wrong with plastic, if its well made, and of a good quality it is, in my opinion superior to a metallic material, such as anodised Aluminium.
Most phones that i have owned over the years have been plastic. The metallic phones and devices have fared fare worse than their plastic counterparts.
Also plastic is far easier to work with and will absorb shocks such as being dropped significantly better than aluminium.
I'd much prefer to suffer a dint in the plastic outer casing of a phone, than the shockwave of the drop being passed through the metalic outer and into the glass screen

I still think the Nexus 5 was the best in hand feeling phone I have ever owned...

Well, the more recent Nexus phones have been cheaply made.

Yes, pricing had been very inconsistent for the various Nexus incarnations. Probably another reason to retire the Nexus brand.

After waiting for months for the new Nexus model, I just don't think I can justify a starting price of $650. I just picked up a ZTE Axon 7 for $320 from a third-party Amazon seller today - my official "throwing in the towel" on the Pixel. Spec-wise, it's hardly a downgrade, and has some things that are better (stereo front facing speakers, micro sd support, and better looking)

While the Pixel might be a decent improvement over the 5x, I just don't see it as being competitive in the overall Android market right now - unless Samsung is the only other brand that someone would consider.

I don't understand all these over reactions to a phone that has not even been announced yet!

I assume most of what we hear is correct but even if the pricing is right, why not wait for the phone to actually be announced, released and reviewed BEFORE saying it's not worth the price?

*scratches head* *shrugs*

I'm excited for it and can't wait! I'll buy day one based on what I've heard so far and if it sucks or is not worth the price then it will go back to Google within the 14-day return period...

I wonder how Google will sell the Pixel phones? Mail order only? Or through places like BestBuy, etc? I don't think it's going to be a VZW exclusive, based on what I've read thus far.
