So you never hear anything from the speaker? Sounds like it may be defective.

This is a known issue and there is probably nothing wrong with your phone.
Go to the phone app - Settings - Accessibility - turn off the hearing aid toggle. You will then have sound through the earpiece.

thanks that fixed my problem and do you know if they are going to fix this issue with an update

It's not an "issue" - it is by design. The Hearing Aid mode essentially redirects the audio output to an external device similar to just another Bluetooth earbud.

The question is, how did it get enabled on your device in the first place?

I have the exact same problem. I received the first Pixel 2XL, and c
ouldn't hear anything without using the speaker phone or bluetooth headset (using a wired headset I heard only clicks). I worked with Project Fi support, but couldn't reboot or put the phone into safe mode, so they sent me a new one. That had the exact same problem. Support did some troubleshooting, and I was able to hear callers - that is, until a few hours later, and I could no longer hear. Project Fi says it's a hardware issue.
I'm now returning my 2nd phone for a replacement. I'll see how this one does.
By the way, the first 8 numbers in the IMEI code of both my phones are identical (35803508), and perhaps this is an issue with a particular batch of phones. If you still have your phone, check the IMEI number. Does it start with these numbers? By the way, the OS was up to date.

somehow I missed Nelson 1 and the hearing aid setting fix. I cannot find it under accessibility. What is the exact path to get to this setting?

So, I need to say "nevermind' to my post. I finally found the hearing aid setting, and it was activated. Must have been the same for my first phone. The support people at Google Project Fi should have known this. I'm still on the fence - I'll see if this fixes it permanently. (odd that my first phone had the same issue)

I am on my 2nd pixel and you might be on to something with the IMEI code. as The one I have now has that number you are talking about. I am so disappointed as we missed the black friday sale and wanted until now to get these phones.

Has anyone figured out how to remove the latest update? I first opened this phone on Saturday Dec 23 and it worked fine for calling until I did the update that the phone was prompting me to do. So Google needs to launch a new update with this fixed

Can't find the hearing aid setting.
Are you looking in the Phone application (aka Dialer)? Select the three dots in the upper right corner, then follow the instructions from earlier in the thread. Or see the screenshots (these are from a Nexus 6P but it should be similar).

Try taking off your case. I had same problem, could not hear voice over ear speaker. Tried everything took off my slim case and phone works normally... Strange. The case must shift and block some sensor or something.

This is the second thing that taking off the case fixed. The first was my phone speaker fading out when playing music or pod casts. Took off the case and fixed. Put the case back on and still worked.

Anyway, worth a shot.

I have a second case I purchased. Will see if it also causes issues.

EDIT: Well the case off option stopped working. I have however found if I bang the top of my phone a few times on the desk the earpiece starts working.

I had same problem. First phone I couldn’t hear the other person, and the other person couldn’t hear me. I got a replacement. The second phone worked until I did the 8.1.0 update. Then the other person could hear me but I couldn’t hear them. Read this forum and checked the hearing aid feature, and it was turned on.

Oh... that is good to know. I will keep that in mind to help out others.

Thanks for responding with the fix! :).
