Pixle 4 + Black Friday

What does non activated mean? I live in HK and will probably try to buy the Pixel 4XL from Best Buy as I suspect I can get it faster than from Google.

Can I safely order the non activated version and it'll be unlocked for any carrier in the world? (once the $200 off deal goes live?)

I think what they're referring to by non activated is that at the time of purchase, it isn't being activated on or assigned to a specific carrier. In essence it's just like buying a phone retail and then putting your sim card in on your timetable. I believe that if you buy one that needs to be activated on a carrier to get the discount, you're also subject to am activation fee from the carrier, whereas an unlocked, non activated phone wouldn't need to be activated by the carrier (which in reality if you already have a carrier non of them should need to be activated by them, simply swap your sim card from your old phone to your new one).

The only time there should be an activation fee is for new customers IMHO, as they'd need to enter your billing info into their system. After that, swapping SIM cards is all that's necessary to change devices. It's just the carriers double dipping to generate more revenue. There really is no need for them to do anything in this case unless there's an issue like a bad sim card that would require them to activate a new one on their network.

If you buy an unlocked phone from best buy you have the option to buy it activated or not activated. If you choose to activate, best buy gives a discount but you have to go thru the upgrade process on your carrier account which in turn charges an activation fee. For example, best buy gives $50 discount if you activate on Verizon, but at the same time Verizon charges $40 for activation fee. So net effect you are saving $10.

If you just buy without activation then no activation fee or anything since you are not upgrading thru the carrier system. You can just put your existing sim and use the phone normally.

Unless the activation discount is $100 or more I don't care about that option and generally just go with activate later option.

For you since you are in HK, only option is activate later since you don't have a carrier account here. And that too if best buy ships internationally which I don't know they do.

I see google also has a $200 off sale for unlocked, swap sim, no activation I’m assuming. So a clean no BS deal. Makes the basic 4 $599. Still more than I’d pay but not bad as full price for sure.

That's a pretty good deal!

Yeah I always like it that way, no bull**** crap dealing with the crappy carriers. Yes yes I know not that big of deal but that's the way I like it. I don't touch anything to do with US carriers

Do I lose out on some discounts from carriers? Yes but I could care less.

I agree 100% - Google Fi for me. Will get a P4 64 GB as soon as the $200 off deal goes live at the Google/Fi store.
As much as I like saving $$s, I like saving BS even more.
@bhatech - you and I are wise and wonderful people.

Haha ... Good luck on the purchase. I'll be purchasing my 4 XL from Google store tonight. And returning the one I bought from Amazon before November 30th. Thank God for Amazon 30 day return policy. I would have had zero problem keeping what I have if they could just price match. But they rather have me return and buy again instead of price match

I'm curious to see what time the deal goes live

Ran into same with Best Buy - I think some of the BF prices are programmed into the computers in such a way that they can't be accessed earlier than originally scheduled.

Several years ago I dealt with a local Verizon store. Tried to get a phone the day before launch and the clerk told me he couldn't sell me the phone even if he wanted to. The computer wasn't set up to do so yet.

Maybe all the Google people are sleeping - Pixel Slate hasn't dropped price either.

That's what I'm waiting on... Really hoping it's 12AM PT at this point, or I'm going to be very aggravated staying up till 3AM my time...

Google actually has live service (1 minute callback) for sales inquiries pretty much 24/7. I spoke with a representative right after midnight ET to see if they could confirm a start time. They couldn't...

Just wondering if we have the gear already in our carts will save time, or if they'll have to be added after the same goes live.

I'd wait and add gear AFTER it goes live - which it has.

It actually applied the promo to the existing cart. Good to know for the future.

Of course, I didn't know they'd offer the option of the Brydge keyboard, so edited that in.

I got a 4 XL white 128 GB, with expedited shipping should be here by 26-27th. Time to initiate that return process with Amazon.
