Playing music files in order

I've come to the conclusion, after trying several different file managers, music players and playlist organisers, that it simply isn't possible to choose the order in which music will be played. I have two folders of mp3 files, both of which contain track numbers on every file, but, when I try to create a playlist, it just ignores the track numbers and plays the files in alphabetical order. I have read several help files explaining how to edit the order of a playlist all of which refer to options which don't exist on my phone.

It's running android 4.1.1 if that helps.

This seems such a basic requirement for a music player that it seems impossible that it's been overlooked and yet that seems to be the case.

Can anyone confirm that this just isn't something considered important, or tell me how you actually do it.

Many thanks.

Welcome to Android Central! What music player are you using? When I use Google Play Music and create a playlist, the order of the tracks is the order in which I added them. Have you tried that?

Thanks for the welcome.

I've used a Music app that was installed on my phone when I got it (Huawei Ascend Y300) - it's just called "Music". I did try adding the tracks in the right order, but it played them in alphabetical order.

I also tried using the player that came with the ES Filemanager app. I managed, once, to create a playlist with this app, but couldn't ever find it again, or figure out what I'd done to create it in the first place.

I tried a different app that was just called "Music" - I think it may have been an older app. I tried something called something like "Playlist organiser" but it didn't do anything at all, that I could see.

I just tried the Google Play Music app and, yes, it does seem to play the tracks in the order I added them which is something. That said, it's a very tedious process to add 20 or 30 tracks one at a time - much easier to add them as a folder (which the default Music app does, to be fair) and then shuffle them. According to Google's on-line manual, you can reorder the tracks in a playlist by dragging their handles up and down but, on my phone, that just scrolls the whole list up and down.

The Google Play player, though, only seems to have a pause control - no track skipping or anything.

Anyway, I guess I get a choice - play the tracks in random order (which is what alphabetical is if you're listening to something that needs to be in track order) or play them from beginning to end withouth a chance to skip them.

Thanks for the tip.

Actually, you can skip ahead. Just tap on the lower bar that shows the currently playing song, which will expand it to fill the screen. Then you'll have the skip forward/skip ahead control visible.

As for the tedium of creating the playlist, it'd probably be easier to create it on the Google Play Music website. The Playlist will then sync to your phone.

The Google Play Music website requires a credit card and, even though they say they won't charge it, I'm not giving it to them.

Thanks, anyway, for the suggestion.
