Please recommend a ROM to me

(I've made it through the first 110 pages of the Baked Snack thread on XDA. Ironically, it appears that early version of Baked were incompatible with RA Recovery. Early adoptors were forced to use Clockwork. I expect that things have changed, but I'll have to keep reading to find out.)

Damn more power to ya! When your done reading the 550+ pages can we get some kind of cliff notes version of all the important stuff :p

After running simple root and flashing the Baked Snack 1.7 ROM, I had to flash the updated radios. PRI is at 1.34 and I'm still trying to get that updated to 1.4 but I've read that can take multiple times trying to activate to get it updated.

Oh and just checked, and the hboot that gets installed using simple root is .76

Does ROM manager automatically update the PRI and the Radio's? I didn't have to update any of my radios and all mine are up to date with what is said to be the latest and greatest?

I rooted with unrevoked and I still have hboot version .93 with Baked Snack 1.7 and the revolution theme.....

Heh. I'm up to page 307, now. I'm feeling a bit woozy, and slightly suicidal.

Those ROM threads have an amazingly low signal-to-noise ratio. And of course most of the posts are complaining about one problem or another. Or, asking a question that was answered 3 times on the previous page. After reading for a while I begin to doubt whether any ROMs actually work, and whether humanity really deserves to exist. ;)

I haven't gleaned any great insights, yet. Here are some rules of thumb, instead:

  • When in doubt, don't use Clockwork recovery. It only works most of the time.
  • When in doubt, wipe.
  • Read the gosh darned OP before asking a question.
  • After flashing a new ROM, especially when it's a major revision from your previous ROM, restoring with Titanium Backup is a risky endeavor. Much safer to just re-install by hand.
  • No one cares that you just took your phone off the charger and it's already down to 93%. Really. No, it's not the ROM.
  • Never install a ROM in the first 24 hours after its release. Bump that up to 72 hours if you are a newb.

Haha a very good list to follow, seriously.

To answer some questions I saw earlier

  • Baked Snack works with amon ra 1.8 recovery just fine, I would HIGHLY recommend this recovery as well
  • You will most likely have to update your radio, WiMax driver, and PRI after rooting with SimpleRoot. It's a fairly easy process, and are listed in my signature
  • Robbie, I think you rooted via unrevoked weird method right? If so that means your Radio and Wimax and PRI are most likely up to date. (The one benefit of rooting with unrevoked) ;)

YES, I rooted with unrevoked weird method... :) but I guess the silver lining is up to date PRI and Radio's...... I am happy with Baked Snack so there was no reason to go back and run Simple Root (at least not right now) just to get back to the .76 hboot....

Thanks for the information... Going to try smooth sense this weekend... See how I like that Theme...

Yeah... Baked Snack is truly a great ROM. Maybe when cynagonen gets 4G, HDMI, and FM Radio working on his ROM you'll think twice :)

I feel the same way about CM6.... Would love to try it out but A. I have to go back to Simple root and downgrade to hboot .76 and B. you get no 4G either (not sure what else might be missing)

Baked Works... Love it so far...:p

Just finished reading this whole thread and have a few comments.

1. Thanks to the op for a great question. I was wondering the same and it has produced wonderful information.

2. I used simpleroot and have been playing around with roms. Here's some thoughts on a few:
Vaelpak rom feels great and I really liked it. Didn't have sense but had most of the sense goodies feeling like adding fancy widget and the extra sprint apps saved in the sd card if you wanted to install them. Only reason I left it was because I started having permission errors on saving to my sd card and couldn't take pictures. (I don't know of others with that problem.)

Cyanogen - really didn't like this rom. It has no sense feel and was hard to get used to. When I was in 4g areas it messed up the data connections so it would not work. Battery life was decent. I don't like some of the launcher apps they force you to use. (Vaelpak had many launchers installed and let you pick which ones you liked) it didn't seem like there were many widget options either in this.

3. Currently downloading baked snack 1.7 and am excited to use it. I'll let you know how it goes.

Yeah I would really love to go to a ROM with out Sense, But it seems none offer 4G just yet (or at least not the highly rated ones) I have not and don't plan on using HDMI or the FM radio on my phone.... So those two are not a big deal for me....

My first Android phone was the Nexus One for about 3+ months before the EVO came out so I got use to a plane vanilla Android and It's pretty cool that way.. The only MAJOR difference are the Widgets and a few minor HTC added items... The basic function of Android is the same... Heck I came from 2 years with an iPhone and I felt moving to Android was very easy and the basic functions of the OS was similar you just have the option to customize way more on Android vs iPhone OS...

I have Sirius/XM radio in my car and the morning DJ/crew were even joking (They all have iPhones) about certain themes and sounds.... Said they couldn't do certain things but if they had an Android phone they could....

Lockscreen question for you guys.

I was using vaelpak and cyanogen for the past two weeks and loved the lockscreen that swipes in it.

I like baked snack for some of the sense Widgets I missed but I hate the sliding down lockscreen. Is there an apk or something I can download to go to the side swipe lockscreen. I've tried some of the apps in the market before and they were horrible.

I used Fresh when on 2.1 and using Fresh3.2 now. It works great. I tried a diff kernal this time and it cruizes.

I tried Baked snack when I was on 2.1 and didnt care for it much at that time. batt life went down the crapper. Coulda been something hanging open and wake locks, but I went to Fresh and kept that on until the OTA 2.2 was pushed.

Im currently running Fresh 3.2 with netarchy 4.1.8-cfs-bfq.
Very smooth ,Stable , Great batt life and Sense.
I have currently narrowed down my search for roms. I have Stock Froyo 2.2 just rooted. It is between Fresh 3.2 and Baked Snack 1.7 but my question is do these roms still have working HDMI and 4G?

Thanks

topcop

Both should have 4G. I know for a fact Fresh does. The last baked snack I was on did, so i would assume this newer one does.

HDMI, I am not sure. I dont use it. I see some kernals will make mention of HDMI problems, but I didnt pay too much attention on the ones I am running as I do not use it.

Confirmed that Baked Snack 1.7 has working 4G. Should have working HDMI as well, but my cable hasn't arrived yet so I don't have the ability to test.

So this is Baked Snack 1.7 on my Evo non overclocked with Launcher Pro. The video got cut off right before I did the Quadrant score and it got 1133. I don't think I've ever gotten over 1200 on Baked but then again I'm not overclocked.

YouTube - Baked Snack 1.7 on Sprint Evo

The closest rom I've encountered like this is cyanogen 6.

what kernel would you suggest for Fresh? I want to have a slight OC and the fps cap removed like the Baked Snack roms have.

i dunno. I can only comment on what I am using. The kernal itself is not overclocked to my knowledge. I overclock it in SetCPU and working fine for me.
Nothing I have noticed in the last couple days as far as blips.

I just installed Fresh 3.2.0.0 and now the screen displays the message "Set New Clock Successful". What does this mean? I'm not overclocking or underclocking the CPU...

Perhaps the ROM includes the SetCPU app, and perhaps that app has been set to do some underclocking or something? That's what I'd look for first.

Okay, it's me, the OP, again. I'm still planning on going with Baked Snack and it's default kernel when I get my phone. I'm also planning on using the RA Recovery, instead of Clockwork, at least initially.

What I still haven't decided on is what method I'll use for rooting. The whole manual method of dropping back to 2.1, and then using Simple Root, sounds great, but I will be in hair-on-fire mode when I get my phone, so the brand new Unrevoked 3.2 is very tempting. 5 minutes flat, and no messing with radios, PRIs, and HBoots afterwards.

I guess I better go on over to XDA and see what the latest is on Unrevoked. I'd feel much better if they'd make it fully public again. The more people that use it before me, the better! :p
