Do you want a notch on your next phone?

...but I feel that the notch is a fad because by the time manufacturers find a way to get those components housed in a way that also allows them to put the display all the way to the edge, the notch will be killed off as there's no purpose for it anymore.

Great, now we can enjoy even more accidental touches.

It's funny that phones are now including the ability to "black out" the notch. It's indicative that the companies realize people don't really want them. I don't get the trend, saying "it gives you more screen". It's literally a few millimeters of extra screen at the cost of something that looks silly and most people don't want.

So far "no" is winning the pole almost 2:1 against "yes" and "don't care" in the forum pole. Very different than normal users.

who gives a flying you know what ? I have the P20 Pro now since it's release, I don't hide it, I barely notice it now. it's just become part of the phone, people hate change, I remember year's ago people were shocked at the thought of 6" screen's, it's all part of the progress. move on haters...

if it doesn't bother you then that's great, not a problem. I certainly would not call it progress though. I also didn't hate the 6in screens that came out back then but I didn't buy one either. and I won't be buying the notch unless it's unavoidable. pure choice on my part not, hate.

I personally don't think it's progress Tbh.

They only did it because they wanted a slightly higher screen:body ratio but put the notch in order to house the sensors and camera until a way is found to put them behind the display or other solution.

I'm sure the designers and engineers will want to eliminate the notch as much as some of us wish to. Thing is, once a solution is found that's feasible, the notch will disappear. It's basically a design fad. It's not really progress when it's more of a workaround than a permanent part of future designs.

Notches are a stopgap until they can properly put all the sensors behind the glass.

Until then, it's no big deal.

Definitely not something to get angry about.

My new answer is: it would depend.

I like how Huawei and Essential do their notices. The P20 and Essential Phone are gorgeous devices. Don't really enjoy the look of the notch on other phones; but I'm keeping an eye on LG and seeing how they do.

Maybe I'll buy a notch in the future...

But as it stands now, I love my bezels!

Also, great post!

Pretty much

It won't be around for a long time.

For me, it is no notch. One of my favorite features on Android, that I also loved on the Palm Pre, is the notification system. Hiding notifications behind an overflow button ignores the point of a notification: to notify. If I can't see it, it is not notifying me of something. Outside of that, I don't care about the notch. If they moved the notification bar to the bottom, I would have no issues with a notch.

Or the side, similar to Ubuntu. Phones are getting pretty tall right now, and the longer side might make a better notification area.

To me it's doesn't seem like a design trend that will last. There are many places left on the phone chassis to place buttons. You are essentially missing data with notches, especially streaming media.
