I don't want a notch or on screen buttons either but out of the two on screen buttons is the least worst of the two as they can be hidden, unlike the notch!!!
I've come to love on screen buttons, especially how LG implements them. I can customize which order they are in, and add/remove some. I personally have it set up with five buttons, the extra two being a notification pull down and their Q-slide floating apps.

Hell...and...no. I would happily have a small band at the top to keep it symmetrical. Also, I hate curved glass screens, they serve no purpose and make cases and screen protectors less effective.

l've got the P20 Pro and I love how notifications and icons sit either side of the notch.

Yet if an app crashes you have no buttons available to try and get out of it either that or the buttons lock up and prevent you from using them. That's the exact reason why I don't like on screen buttons, not only that but there's the risk on screen burn in if the screen is left on.

Never had the buttons lock up, so that's not an issue for me. I was a bit hesitant to use them initially, but I've come to favor the added flexibility.

I also don't use phones with AMOLED screens, so burn in is not an issue either.

AMOLED or LCD they can both suffer from burn in.

LCD's can get screen retention, but it goes away. Even then, only my V20 has had it. None of my prior phones did, and it's not a common complaint I see. It's not permanent burn in.

Notch?

No. I think it's absolutely stupid. Yes, I said it. It's an ill-conceived idea to "fake" a larger screen ratio when as soon as you watch a video or play a game, it has to mask itself out and you're back to the ratio it should have been in the first place - or, you end up with this object covering actual screen area.

I'm for true screen integrity. I'm not so hung up on ratios - 16x9, 18x6, whatever. But the all four edges must remain clear and straight or it's out.

I'm open to the change. Notch or no notch. It doesn't change what (IMO) a smartphone experience should be.

1. Software - (User friendly, intuitive, smooth, reliable, and smart)
2. Camera - Great point and shoot experience, high quality images, very good low light performance, quick launch
3. Hardware - 64GB+ storage, all day battery life with moderate use (3,000mAh usually does it), RAM doesn't matter as long as the phone uses it efficiently. Water resistance is borderline must-have followed by convenient wireless charging.

At some point I shall need to replace my Pixel 2 with a newer Pixel and I hope like heck they do not have a notch on it as I am not a notch fan. I find it humorous how iPhone X users say they love the notch or don't notice it any more( I have an iPhone7) What a load of crap, blinded by the kool-aid. It sticks out like a sore thumb, there is not any way to not notice it especially when viewing video. Makes the phone seem off balance. I've read some articles that say Apple may be dumping the notch for future iPhones and by then all these other manufacturer's will be all on board with their own notches. At least the Essential has a small one. But why does everybody(phone makers) follow Apple? Can't they think on their own? Sheesh... Come on Google, no notch! Smaller bezels? Yes! We dont need or want face ID. The FPS works great!

I don't mind the notch *if the manufacturer can find an elegant way of hiding it* (Looking at you Huawei P20/P20 Pro) :D

That's the OS behaviour but it doesn't always happen.
I've used phones with on screen buttons exclusively since 2013 and I've never had an issue... Anything that is going to freeze up those on screen buttons will freeze up capacitive buttons as well. The two are really not that much different.. they are both software buttons.

That I feel is the main issue with the notch.

Some are just implemented so poorly to the point where it encroaches on content.

The better implementations reserve the area around it for system icons but I feel that the notch is a fad because by the time manufacturers find a way to get those components housed in a way that also allows them to put the display all the way to the edge, the notch will be killed off as there's no purpose for it anymore.
