The problem here is not having to pay extra $10 for thr 4g experience or whatever they wanna call it is just that 4g is very sppoty and charging ppl like me in an area where im just getting 3g is ridicously not fair what are they thinking why do we here in no 4g areas have to pay for it it makes no sense...

The reason for the up charge on EVERYONE is due to history.

The year was... well, I dunno what year it was, but recall the PPC-6700, the first EvDO device for Sprint. Some areas had it, some didn't. It was difficult to determine who did and who didn't and they only charged certain accounts the up charge to use !POWER VISION! (has to be said in caps and obligatory !).

This is a unified method, roll out the up charge by device, regardless of 4G or not, because eventually Sprint will blanket their entire network with 4G. So yes, you are paying a premium if you don't get it but you eventually will. Their billing system went to crap with the EvDO debacle (there were even some people getting !POWER VISION! with a grand fathered data plan for 10 bucks everything), I think it's a brillant way to keep ahead of the curve.

For those of you who are getting 4G, I wouldn't go as far to say stop whining over the 10 bucks, but you want the best phone on the market without the best cellular technology behind it? Ok, that's odd, and I've got no comment I suppose. And if you are saying that isn't the case, that you do want the best phone and the best tech, than pay to be the best... it didn't cost Sprint nothing to buy Clear, put up additional hardware, R&D, Advertising... Data might be cheaper for Sprint, but implementation wasn't free.

I think that from a big picture standpoint Spring is failing at the moment. As of right now Sprint is still bleeding customers. If the Evo is supposed to be the phone that really helps turn that around why would you put an extra roadblock to the average consumer switching over to Sprint. Remember first an AT&T or Verizon customer would have to get over Sprint's reputation. I know Sprint is much better now but many people don't realize that. So once they're over that hurdle and they walk into a store some store rep is gonna have to tell them that they will have to pay an extra $10 a month for the phone. What will a potential customer think when you tell them that an Everything plan isn't quite everything anymore. Or that its everything except if you get the phone that brought you into the store in the first place.

What Sprint doesn't realize is that their explanation for the charge doesn't fly. If its for 4G service then if I don't live in a 4G area why should I pay? If its for premium data why is it Evo users have to pay but Hero, Moment, Pre and other smartphone users don't have to pay they they have the potential to use just as much data and bandwidth as the Evo user?

No matter how they spin it the charge comes across as a "cool phone tax" and as much as we all love HTC products they don't have the weight of Apple & the Iphone just yet.

Except when you add a charge to customers and say its to pay for upgraded service then I as a user and someone paying the fee, want the benefit of that new service. What Sprint is doing is asking people living in the largest metro areas (NYC, LA, San Fran, Boston, etc) to pay extra for service we don't have and smaller areas get to enjoy. Why add an extra roadblock to the early adopters that live in these tech areas?

I'm just waiting for Verizon to start a campaign about the Incredible having the same specs as the Evo and that you can get it with no extra charge on the "best 3G network". Worse if Verizon does another map campaign showing the 4G coverage vs the $10 up charge. AT&T got their asses handed to them because of coverage issues, why wouldn't it happen to Sprint as well with this potential PR nightmare.

Problem with that is that Verizon is still more expensive - so i'm pretty sure they don't want to go down that road.

Yes but at least the majority of people are paying for services and features they can actually use. Verizon can easily point out that Sprint is charging this many people (and show a map) an extra $10 bucks form nothing extra at all!

If I had 4G coverage I would not care paying the extra 10 dollars, because I would be getting something out of it, but I don't feel like bending over and taking it from Sprint and getting nothing at all in return. People need to realize that it is not whether you can afford it or not, it is whether you are getting anything from it. And for those who say "oh well it isn't really for 4G service it is for the premium experience even in 3G" stop BS'ing yourselves. I have 3 lines in my account and we were all planning to get the Evo, but $30 dollars extra a month for a service we wont be able to use for a while is ridiculous!

this killed my evo dreams for the moment. i will go get a hero or moment whichever is cheaper

Well, sort of. Here's the problem with that:

* Verizon's network is 100% 3G, so for people in areas where Sprint has only partial 3G and 2G/1x, you're getting more for the money with Verizon.

The only place this is diff? Where Sprint has 4G. But of course, you pay the $10 everywhere.

I am not going to sit and read through all of this but here is my take. EVEN with the extra $10 the plans are still cheaper then all the rest of the carriers. WOuld everyone rather they raise their rates across the board to keep up?

Everyone wants Sprint to have the cheapest rates, best CS, best phones, etc etc but they expect all of this with the cheapest cell rates.

The option is, don't buy the EVO. THe $10 bucks is worth it for the phone. I am pre ordering 2 today.

I will give an example of how cheap Sprints rates are. I have a family plan with 3 phones. WHen I looked to switch to the Iphone I asked for the same services I have now with Sprint. THe bill would be an EXTRA $100 more then I am paying now with sprint. So I am perfectly OK with the extra $10 they want to charge.

You should of read, your argument was already touched on.

The Droid Incredible is essentially the same phone as the Evo. The major difference is 4G but to be honest that is a non issue with 4G being available in so few places. When Verizon released the Incredible they didn't say they would charge you extra because its a newer phone. The argument doesn't make sense when the point is to retain or lure new customers. For Sprint to say this new phone will cost you $120 a year extra "just because" plays into Verizon's hands as well as other carriers. Sprint is constantly bleeding customers, why would they add an extra roadblock to getting customers to come to Sprint. They already have to overcome the negative stereotype Sprint has, an extra fee won't help at all.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this already but Sprint has a 10% discount (found out about it today) on your recurrent bill if you are a member of a credit union, which I just became one recently. So in my case, I have the $129 family plan, so the discount will take care of the extra $10.

Hey guys I sent an email to Dan Hasse yesterday regarding dumping sprint due to the $10 fee and someone from his office they claim anyway just called me back regarding my email. It was a funny discussion where the rep knew all the info about the fee but after I started asking her questions like why am I not being charged that $10 fee on my HTC Hero that is almost an identical phone just less powerfull she said well you can watch movies on the evo, it was just funny when I told her ok I can do that on my phone and my last 5 phones I've owned through sprint but anyway, its a loose loose situation. They are not going to do anything about it and thats it eventhough at the end she didn't know hereself why they are charging the $10 fee after all my questions. It was just kind of funny.

Oooh she also said Dan Hasse like to compare the Evo to a high definition tv.
I told yes I own a high definition tv but I have a choice through my satelite company to buy high definition service, but with sprint I have no choice. She was pretty stumped. LOL

The only way Sprint will change their mind about the extra $10 fee is if they get a good amount of bad publicity about it, instead of talking about how great the EVO is. If enough news sources report that people are angry and the fee seems to be unfair, they will retract the fee.

The difference between being in a 4g market and in a NON 4g market can be the difference of one block so how the hell is Sprint going to determine if your HOME is 4g or not. Better yet your home can be in a NON 4g market and you can drive over to a 4G market, so it's impossible for Sprint to determine, so the next option is to charge everyone which they did and the most logical decision is NOT TO CHARGE AT ALL!

hey just got a email replay from sprint as well regarding my call which is this, I hope more people send emails to that address so that it can become a bigger issue.

Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today. The purpose of
this email is to recap what we discussed earlier. Per our conversation,
you express your concerns about the $10 Premium Data Fee associated with
our new HTC EVO. This fee is so that the HTC EVO 4G users can
experience the data quality that EVO provides. Sprint’s Everything Data
plan for $69.99 includes unlimited text, picture and video messaging,
unlimited data usage with 450 anytime minutes and our newest feature Any
Mobile, Anytime. This new feature allows you the flexibility to call
any another mobile provider and not use your anytime minutes as long as
not roaming. The $10 Premium Data add-on is a required feature when
purchasing or upgrading to the HTC EVO 4G in order to utilize the full
functionality of Sprint’s newest Android device. We appreciate your
feedback which, will be forwarded to the appropriate management team for
further review. If you have any additional questions or concerns, feel
free to contact me by email at Dan@Sprint.com or directly on
(757)223-3904. I am available Monday through Friday from 9:00am-6:00pm
EST.

Thank you for choosing Sprint. Have a wonderful day.

Yeh, but when you are in a state without any 4G at all and not even on the list for the future, you shouldn't be charged for 4G. I'm in Connecticut and we are not on any list.

Same for Indiana. No 4g here nor are we scheduled to get it.

i also sent an email to dan to complain.. i said that data usage is determined by the user, not the phone..and wierdly not a real answer to that..

The resale value would of been great on EVO if they charged us more skipping the 10.00 gotch ya charge.
A year down the road you wont be able to give it away lol.

Those playing we love Sprint no big deal $10.00 charge will change their tune soon.
