Are you turned off by the $10 buy up

I wish the fee was not added on, but I can sure understand why Sprint is doing it. I would rather pay an extra $10 to get the best phone on a hell of a network than pay $140 for a comparable plan from Verizon or ATT, both of which have inferior data networks to that of Sprint. Verizon is definitely the largest network, but it's not all quality. I ALWAYS get more consistent and faster speeds on my Pre than ALL of my friends do on a Droid.

So pay less for a better phone and a beter network, despite the $10 added on? Sign me up.

I feel the same way you do and WILL definitely get the EVO despite the short battery life and $10 "Data" charge, BUT after reading this website, I am now a little more turned off about the $10 charge. Great site. Explain the Fee!

With all the people that argue it is not fair, no one has proposed how exactly this would happen.

Only charge people that live in 4G area
How has this happened historically? 2G to 3G?
Sprint would have to block access to people that live in 3G areas when they go into 4G areas

Seems like a lot of work for a 4G phone.

Obviously, this phone/charge is meant for people in 4G areas to take full advantage of its capabilities. If you are not in a 4G area, why not just wait? If you don't want to wait, there's a fee and its $10/month. Doesn't seem complicated to me.

How widely available was 3G on ATT when they started releasing 3G phones/plans? People want to make it seem like Sprint is being unfair and this is the first of any carrier charging a fee to everyone that only a few can take advantage of.

The buildout costs money..that's why they're tacking an extra 10 bucks a month to subscribers using their first 4G phone.

and, from the looks of all the internet posts, chatter, and discussion, the answer to that question is a resounding, OVERWHELMING YES!!

But Sprint contends that it is a device charge not a 4G charge so this would not apply. Now it is up to consumers to decide if the evo is worth $10/month extra.

False. Sprint calls it a "premium data fee" not a device charge. If it was a device charge, then paying full retail for the device should allow you to avoid the monthly fee.

I dont like that there is a $10 fee, but am going to get the EVO anyways. I dont believe that I will be using anymore data with the EVO than I would be with the Palm Pre that I have now. Oh wait... Yes i will. Because Sprint is charging me an extra $10, I'm just going to leave my phone streaming video everytime its charging.

And hopefully I don't have you or someone who thinks like you screwing up my actual use on the cell towers in my area. How selfish.

Easy there killer. I was just kidding.

Sorry sir, sometimes hard to tell when someone is being serious or not on the intarwebs. It's just that I can see someone ticked about the fee actually doing this. I'll quietly go back to waiting now. :o

No problem. No point in running my battery through unnecessary charge cycles right? Can't wait until Friday!

Evident that you are morally and intellectually superior? ;)

I was hoping that remark would get into someone's craw.

you are with out a doubt what is wrong with forums all over the internet. its ppl like you that we dont want or need on here. only thing you are superior at is being a ******. i really hope you dont get an evo because you dont deserve to have such a device. so why not take your fanboy ass back to the icrap. we dont want or need your kind here! you are an idiot sir.

and i would bet that 99% of ppl here would agree with me on this.

Mission accomplished!

Excellent site. Is exactly the points I have been talking about all along. Glad I am not alone.

life isnt always fair, so deal with it...

In this situation we have the right to take our business elsewhere. Mainly to carriers who have superior networks (verizon, At&t, t-mobile) and get top of the line phones every few months rather than every couple of years. Best of all we have the choice of using carriers that will only charge us for the services that we can receive, rather than charge us for services that most of us cannot.

The buildout costs money..that's why they're tacking an extra 10 bucks a month to subscribers using their first 4G phone.

Fine, when I get the service I will gladly pay for it. Until then I do not want to finance a 4g network for someone else to enjoy.

Wrong Price points

Frankly, Sprint could have avoided this whole situation(ie implementing a 4G tax) by NOT pricing the EVO near the same price of the iPhone. It should have gone something like this:

  • Full Retail Price: $689 (Subsidized price + $250, ie like it is today)
  • 2-yr contract price: $439 ($689 - $150 Subsidy - $100 rebate)

People would still buy it at $439 and thats the same they would get with the 4G tax ( $439 = $199 + $240 (ie $10 for 2 yrs))

I couldnt agree with you more...Hope you enjoy Att/verizon/Tmobile..

In this country, we vote with our checkbooks on issues like this; if it bothers you, take your money elsewhere; if it doesn't, get ready to enjoy the best smartphone in the world for now!
