Poor GPS performance.

Why then in many of the forums when people are talking about conserving battery life especially on phones like the epic and evo, do they always say to disable the gps to extend battery time? Just trying to get a bit more informed. thx.

Turning the GPS toggle on only makes it available for apps to acces; I will not turn on until an app uses it. You need to decide which apps you allow access to it so you don't drain battery unnecessary.

On my phone, I keep the GPS toggle on all the time but only have the nav programs accesing GPS, weather and others don't.

Although I can't answer that question directly, you could use an app such as Tasker to automatically turn GPS on when you run an app (that you specify) is run. For example, leave GPS off and when you run Maps, Tasker will automatically turn on GPS and when you exit Maps, it'll turn it back off.

my GPS performance is very poor, cant get better than within 30 Meters acurracy on Google Maps where my wifes evo gets within 4 meters almost instantly. tested Full on Clear skys out doors.

iBullfight, you do have GPS turned on (it's not by default) and not just the "Use Wireless Locations" turn on, right?

I used the phone's gps today for the first time. I was up in the middle of no where in some small town up in the mountains. Locked in on my location within seconds and gave perfectly accurate turn by turn direction for the remainder of my drive (about 2 hours). I was extremely impressed considering what I had heard about galaxy phone gps performance. I was constantly a little worried that it might be inaccurate or tell me to turn at the wrong time or think I'm in the wrong place, but it was spot on.

My gps performance was really good. I didnt check how accurate it was but it was good enough to get me where I wanted to.

My GPS works fine, when it can link up to satellites it actually puts me right at my address. However, if I enable wireless locations, I end up at my old address that I moved from in March. It is a few miles away and I think it is weird since this phone has never even been to that area. Any ideas? My modem is new...could my router or Airave have some information cached? If so, any idea how to delete?

WOW! I didnt know that this topic would get a lot of attention. I'm STILL having gps issues.
Here's my problem, and people, help me out. I've gone back to the sprint store, and the manager REFUSES to swap out my phone. The must see it not working in order for it to get replaced. MY phone's gps is sporadic. At times it works fine, other times it doesnt. What irritates me the most was the fact that my old curve 8330 and the evo both locked on a gps signal from the get go while mine didnt. While in the sprint store, the rep got it to lock on in 15 seconds or less. When i did it, in front of the manager, 2 mins went by and still nothing. The manger too my phone, brough up sprint nav and that worked and said "your phone works fine. i'm not swapping it out."

I was pissed. i sent an email to the regional manager and yet no response.

shortcuts on the bottom - home screen, back, search,, etc.. most of the time mine works, but at times it doesnt work. my slider screen is now a bit loose.

So, how do i get sprint to swap out my phone? mine's version 10.8

i'm going to try another sprint store but after the treatment I got, i was pretty disappointed.

suggestions?

Thanks!
Brian

On the Droid X, there is a 3rd setting - the Epic doesn't have - for GPS, and if I'm not mistaken the EVO also has this. I'm not sure if it makes any difference or not. I could never figure out the difference between the first and 3rd checkboxes.

As others have noted, the "Assisted GPS" checkbox does not appear in the Epic Settings menu. On the Epic, aGPS "MS Based" mode is enabled by default. This means that the initial lock is accelerated by initialization data from the network, but the final coordinate fix is calculated on the phone from the satellites.

To access this setting and other details of the GPS setup, there is a hidden menu accessed by a code from the phone dialer. This code will run a hidden system app called GpsSetup. To run that setup app, go to the dialer and enter these characters:

And then what?! They have too many options!!! I don't know what to do? Help!!!!!!!

Thanks for the post and help! I hope that this fixes the issue!

The "Use Wireless Networks" completely solved what few GPS issues I've had so far... I had that option unchecked for some reason and now that I've chosen it, I get my GPS position (while on Wi-Fi I'm sure) locked in my building... when it was off it wouldn't lock in my position while I was home but since I'm always on Wi-Fi anyway when I'm home, it really solves the problem... hopefully it doesn't drain battery but the OS should manage only the programs I have open and help me out with that... good luck to the rest of you having issues!

Based on what he posted, I would say you would go into setup > position mode > operating mode > and click on MSAssisted. Just a guess.

Thanks so much for the info:

Do you have any information about the different settings and what they do. I changed my GPS from MSBased to MSAssisted, will see if this allows it to work on stand-alone mode when radio is off.
