Portrait mode selfies not working.

Are you able to use any of the portrait mode features besides blurring? Like studio, high-key mono, or backdrop?

No. They all become non functional. I also noticed that the background color option for duo calls is also nonfunctional but like the portrait mode camera issue it resolves itself on a reboot but also becomes non functional again the same time as the portrait selfie mode becomes unfunctional. Could this be related?

I hit the power button and volume down button simultaneously. Let the screen go dark, let go of buttons, and I let the phone reboot.
Isn't that just a forced reset? If I understand correctly, it's no different from a normal reset, unless the phone is stuck and won't do a normal reset, in which case the forced reset gets it unstuck.

yeh you are right but that is what Samsung told me to do so I did it. As I expected it did not work. Anyway I just wiped my cache partition to see if that helps. Do you think it might?

Wiping cache partition did not work but after some trial and error I think the new video call effects on the S21 series may be the culprit. That might explain why only the S21 series is affected as that is the only phone to receive that feature I believe. I turned it off and will see what happens

Yeah that feature became available on One UI 3.1

I've had that toggled on all along, but with no effect selected for it. I've now selected blurring as the effect, and my portrait selfies still work properly, but I'll let you know if that changes.

Ok. Also if u can afterwards, try setting the effect to color instead of blur. That was the setting I had it on before turning it off. Thx.

It sounds logical that it could be the issue since video calling effects are only for the front facing camera and that is the only camera adversely affected. Portrait mode works fine with back camera.

Done. No immediate problem with portrait selfies. I'll let you know if any problem develops.

Ok thank you. For me almost two hours with video call effects turned off and portrait selfies are working fine. Hope it lasts. Will report back later.

I got my hopes up too soon. The problem just resurfaced after two hours of working fine. This is so frustrating. The last thing I want to do is a factory reset. Help!!!

Still no problem here, so it's apparently unrelated to the video call effects settings.

Thank you for checking back in. Nothing has worked for me and I am afraid my last resort is the factory reset which I am not happy at all about doing but what choice do I have?

I ran the phone in safe mode for 10 hours and I did not have the problem. therefore I could conclude that it is an application that is causing the portrait selfie camera not to work properly. So now the question is how do I determine which app it is? I have over 100 apps.

Not necessarily. It shouldn't be possible for an app to interfere like that, unless there's both a rogue app running in the background, and also a system bug that lets the app somehow get in the way.

For several years now, some Note and S models have had a problem where some fundamental part of the system stops working for a minority of users. Sometimes it's camera functionality that breaks, sometimes keyboard response, sometimes fingerprint recognition, sometimes display auto-rotate, or some other low-level behavior.

The common thread is that the problem clears up for a while after a reboot, but returns within a few hours or days. It doesn't happen in Safe Mode, but no responsible apps have been identified, despite comparing different affected users' setups and despite affected users systematically removing and restoring apps to investigate.

The problem, for those who encounter it, is not solved by cache clearing, factory resetting, or even device replacement--it seems somehow tied to particular users' accounts. Possibly a driver-level bug is randomly corrupting some resource in a way that's randomly affected by some aspect of the user account.

I hope we're not seeing a return of this problem here. But if a few others are reporting the same thing as you, it's possible. The test will be whether a factory reset solves the problem for you.

That does not sound good at all. I just did a factory reset this morning so I will see what happens. If it is indeed a driver level bug I am done wit Samsung for good and going back to Pixel. This should not be happening.

You sound like you know what you are talking about. I wish I read your post before doing the tedious factory reset. Anyway it is done. But do you think this camera problem may resurface anyway? Based on what you said?

No, I have no idea. But I'll be disappointed if it does return, unless it's fixed promptly by the next update. Anyway, please let us know. Good luck!

Ok I will let you know. So far so good it has been about six hours so far since the reset. (hope I did not jinx myself) Thank you.

Glad to hear! I was probably too quick to raise the pessimistic possibility--just a lingering side-effect of the frustration I experienced with such issues a few years ago. :)
