Hi All

My fascinate was very erratic with gps, sometimes it would lock in 2 minutes and other times it was stuck at searching for satellites for 30 minutes
when it finally locked on it was dead on accurate but it was taking forever

I downloaded this app from the market called GPS Status. Once installed goto settings within the app, there is a splash screen with some info and the standalone gps must be turned on
ok once your in settings goto GPS and Sensors-> Manage A-GPS State -> reset

I tried the navigation after that and it was nearly instant

i have not tried the download option

My phone is rooted and debinged but i don't think that should be relevant

Thanks much

Thank you very much for the post. I was having the same problem, sometimes I would get a connection in 1 or 2 minutes other times it would take quite a while. After downloading the app and following your instructions, my fascinate is connecting to the gps singal right away the few times I have tried it. I don't have a rooted phone and it has worked so far. I will continue to test it out, but it seems like that is a good solution to the gps issue. Maybe it is a software issue that can be corrected.

Dude, nice one! Did as instructed. My gps is now loading almost instantly...... inside even!

Thanks

Well, thought I'd test it. Turned off GPS, DL it, then turned on GPS.

Did what op said and opened Google maps. Showed my position approx. 3 miles from my actual loc. Took approx, 2 minutes and found me spot on.

Did I mention I'm sitting in my man cave (converted bedroom in my house).

Awesome---so far

got the app still hasn't fixed my gps problem, which is incredibly bad and never seems to lock. any sugguestions?

Does seem to work somewhat, instead of putting me half a mile down the road it puts me where I should be. However, it didn't seem to impact GPS Test.

What exactly are you guys doing?? I had two units here over the weekend. I noticed a slight improvement doing the Download AGPS but nothing to write home about. If your firing up your GPS every few hours it seems to get a lock quickly. But leave it untouched for 12 hours or more and I still had to wait anywhere from 2 to 6 minutes to get a position fix. This was the case for both units. Sometimes one would lock 30 seconds to two minutes after the first but both were painfully slow. Even with GPS Status.

My Dinc on the other hand was powered off for the past three days got a lock in 20 seconds. It makes the Fascinate look like a cheap toy when it comes to the GPS function....Why is that! So frustrating!

Its a nice phone and I like everything about it Bu the GPS blows...... ^^^ post above could not have said it any better.

Your workaround got me a lock, but the location shown in Google Maps was off by an entire city block--not quite accurate enough for navigating dense urban areas, unfortunately.

I hope Samsung/Broadcom sort out whatever the problem is, but I'm becoming less optimistic about that given that they seem not to have definitively solved the problem with recent updates to the Epic and Captivate . Too bad--otherwise, Galaxy S phones have amazing specs and the Fascinate in particular has been great to me.

Ok I tried this on mine - before I did it, it would take a couple minutes to lock on and it was about a block off on location. Now it won't lock on at all! Anybody know how to undo whatever this app did?

Seems to have made a difference for me as well. The true test will be of it continues to lock quickly or if it's just a one time deal.

Thanks for the tip!

My wife and I went out of town over the weekend. At our destination we each had separate places to go so we got latitude up and running so we could find each other. Before running the GPS Status app it was really bad. She could not use navigation, much less maps. Latitude showed her position jumping all over the place. When driving back I had my DX in the car cradle running Google Navigation. Just for fun I brought up maps and refreshed latitude, it showed her 2 miles or more up the road. We had a laugh when we passed her other self.
Anyway this method for kick starting the GPS in this phone is awesome and I feel much better about purchasing it.

Tried this four different times and could not duplicate the results. Given there was some pretty heavy cloud cover this morning and I was inside the house. Will try again under better conditions.

PS: I tried it again after turning the phone off and on. Started the GPS intialization process in my free of trees and other tall structures and it locked on in less than 3 seconds.

I agree - this is a good catch!

Saved me as I am going to play hockey and needed directions to the rink. GPS worked fine until tonight when i needed it...but I remembered this post and did the instructions as you said and it worked instantly. Now if the GPS will help me find my way out of the penalty box.....
