Possible method to root 4.3

Worked like a charm. Has anyone found a way to flash custom ROMs yet. I keep getting errors, bootloader I believe.

I think people have flashed custom ROMs after this procedure. What recovery (and version) are you using, and what ROMs have you tried.

Exactly what does the error message say?

the easiest and safest way ive found to root the galaxy s3 with 4.3os is saferoot.zip(link at xda developers) it does NOT trip knox and nothing show on the counter. it uses stock rom and kernel.

I've been trying this all day and following post 30, but every time I flash supersu, it restarts the phone without allowing me to remove knox. My custom rom count is now over a dozen and can't seem to get the sequence right here. I'm running 4.3 on a Sprint S3 and just removed the phone from service and I'm wondering if this could be causing any issues. I'm stuck between the supersu install and knox flash. Supersu is installed so I'm also wondering if I should uninstall it and then try flashing supersu?

Hmm, I haven't seen that before. Did you successfully install a custom recovery, and then pull the battery so the phone didn't reboot normally? When you boot into recovery to try to flash SuperSU, what recovery do you have?

Uninstalling SuperSU before flashing can't hurt. And once you get rooted you can use Triangle Away to reset the flash counter when necessary.

I don't think it should matter if the phone is in service or not, but I don't know if anyone has tried that before.

It worked! Finally! Used the PhilZ recovery and it worked first try. Thanks!

Update: It changed my network from 4G to 3G.

The easiest way is probably to find the complete ROM for the version you want to have on the phone (e.g., 4.3), and flash it through Odin, AFTER running triangle away to reset the flash counter.

Roms are available from Sammobile: Firmwares | SamMobile

And you can follow these instructions to unroot but use the newer ROM from Sammobile, not the older one linked in the thread.:

http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...-30-2012-sprint-only-unroot-return-stock.html

Note that if you have a full factory version of any ROM with Knox (4.3 or 4.4.2) you can NOT use Odin to revert to an older version. Trying to Odin from 4.3 to 4.1.2, or 4.4 to 4.3 or earlier will brick your phone.

Try going into settings and updating PRL and Profile. If that doesn't work, enter ##72786# in the dialer and let the phone reprovision. It will reboot 2 or 3 times during the process.

Just ran this method, worked perfectly. Thanks mate!

I'm sort of making this up as I go along, but worst case you'll be no worse off:

Remove the back cover of your phone so you can easily pull the battery.

Download the flashable zip version of SuperSU from here: UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.65.zip | by upndwn4par for Galaxy S 3
and the Knox remover from here: [CWM][SCRIPT][4.2.2/4.3] DE-SAMSUNGNIZER Script V4.1 - Clean all unneded Samsung Crap - xda-developers

and copy them to the top level of your internal or external SD.

Install your custom recovery in Odin. Philz recovery seems to work for people who couldn't get TWRP or CWM to work.

Philz: Dev-Host - The Ultimate Free File Hosting / File Sharing Service (use the d2spr version)
CWM & TWRP recoveries: [Recovery] Flashable and the Latest - CWM 6.0.4.5 - TWRP 2.7.0.0 - Stock - xda-developers (use the latest versions)

Make sure the Odin options are as below, with auto reboot unchecked:

Once recovery is installed, pull the battery, so the phone doesn't reboot normally, and disconnect the usb cable.

Put the battery in, and boot into recovery. It is, I think, critical the phone doesn't boot normally. That's where your custom recovery gets clobbered.

Flash supersu and the Knox remover. DO NOT reboot or exit recovery in between.

Reboot. Download and install SuperSU from the playstore. It should prompt you to update binaries. If it doesn't, I'm out of ideas.

Cross your fingers and reboot.

Let me know what happens.

NOTE: This process WILL trip the Knox warranty bit. To the best of my knowledge, there is no way to avoid that when rooting the official 4.3 ROM. By all accounts, Sprint doesn't seem to care if you root your phone, but Samsung certainly does. Following this procedure, or any other root procedure on the stock 4.3, WILL void your warranty.

OMG! I have tried everything in every other thread to get this root to work. knew i was doing it to the LETTER but that damn knox was stopping it.

First try this worked. I did exactly what you said and boom! "Would you like to update the binary now?"

"Binary updated. It is recommended you reboot now."

Thanks alot and 100 kudos to you.
