Post All Eris 2.1 Update Rumors, News, and Updates HERE

Google Nav works on Android 1.6 and 2.0, it doesn't work on 1.5. The MT3G got an OTA update to 1.6 about two months ago, so it will run Google Maps with navigation.

Pending 2.0 Update for and Future of Eris

With the upcoming update to 2.0 (soon, please!) what does this signal for the Eris in the future?

Will it always be a step behind the Droid, or will it eventually catch up in terms of the OS and upgrades (so that they get 2.5, hypothetically, at the same time, for example)?

Once updated to the same OS as the Droid, will it automatically be compatible with the same things as the Droid is/was at that OS level, such as Flash, or might there be other compatibility issues that could hold those things back?

Last, it looks like HTC/VZ may not be committed to the Eris long-term with the Nexus and so many others coming out or rumored to be out in the next several months (with BOGO deals, $9.99 on Amazon, etc). At what point might Android stop pushing out updates to the Eris?

I know that there may be no concrete answers to these questions, but any input or insight you all can provide would be nice.

I see where what you are getting at. Frankly, really the Eris is already passe. Don't get me wrong, I love mine and I find something different and cool about it every day (my first smart phone). But changes in technology have become almost instantaneous....as soon as you take the thing out of the box. The question is like you said, will they keep upgrading it with 2.0, 2.1, 2.6, etc. and, if not, will the software developers keep making apps for 2.0 when the new thing is 2.6? Doubtful and it isn't encouraged. HTC and other hardware companies want you to have to buy new hardware every year or so.

and btw, Go Gamecocks!

if the eris gets updated in the spring to 2.0, i would just as soon get the bravo or the nexus one, which ever comes first, as opposed to keeping the outdated eris. I think they are doing that on purpose because of people like me that have to have the latest tech out there.

This thought occurs to me as well. I love my Eris and I want the software to continue to grow and improve.

We Are. Penn State...sorry, I had to

Everyone has to remember that the Nexus One will be completely handled by Google directly. Sources say that Verizon won t even be doing sales, marketing OR customer support for the Nexus One since it is not going to be directly sold by Verizon. Google will have to do the support, marketing and everything else. Verizon just gives the service.

If enough people buy the Eris over the Moto Droid (which is likely when most users want to save a little on the hardware), then Eris will have to be supported equal to the Moto Droid. Unless Verizon purposefully forces people to go with the droid.. which isn't unlikely.

I don't think HTC Android phones will ever get new OS updates at the same time as other Android phones. HTC has to work the updates into Sense UI, which takes time.

I, for one, love my Eris but... I'm definitely getting the Nexus One when its available to Verizon. Although I'm hoping for the update that brings the os up to 2.0/2.1, I have to say that jumping on the Nexus bandwagon will be easy since I paid nothing but shipping for it!

I love my eris, period. Im looking forward to the update. I just wish I could get a definitive date.

I love my eris too but will also be getting the nexus as soon as possible on verizon. I debated with the droid but got the eris because I hated the form factor of the droid. to me, the nexus has everything in a phone you could want. I still believe that we ,eris owners, will be waiting a long while before we see 2.0 because of sense. Don't get me wrong, i love the sense ui but it is not worth passing the nexus one up for it. I want the larger screen as well. If the nexus wan't coming in a few months I would pick up a droid cheap some where.

I have an upgrade available on the 10th and I am stuck. I couldn't decide between the droid and eris and now the nexus one is coming. I'm coming from an 8330 and I am not sure I can wait until spring. I am excited to be able to upgrade but almost wish I had to wait, no discipline when it comes to gadgets.

What we do not know yet about the Nexus One for Verizon is what the plans will cost, and, specifically, what upgrade plans would cost. I believe that for T-Mobile, the $179 price is only for new customers; existing customers pay either $279 or $379. They also are not allowing a Nexus One to be used as part of a family plan - it is a standalone plan (that would lose me if Verizon does the same.)

Verizon may be completely different, of course, but we do not know yet.

And, of course, "spring" could mean as late as June 20, if they are on time.

No patience=eris. Just ordered it a little while ago. I think it was the best choice for me right now. If I'm not sold, I'll return it and wait it out.

don't get me wrong, the eris is an awesome phone. maybe it is more awesome with 2.0.
I'm just saying that I am not willing to wait forever for someone to make the call and give us 2.0 when the nexus (awesome phone) or better is right around the corner.

you guys have to remember, your upgrades are applicable to Verizon Sold phones.... period.

the NexusOne will be sold by Google directly, I highly doubt they will allow you to apply verizon upgrades to a phone sold by someone else. That would be Verizon's way of making more money out of this "out of contract" deal. but who knows... its all speculation until we know for sure.

What I want to see is Actual PROOF we are going to be getting 2.x on the eris.
not hearsay, either a leaked VZ memo, screenshot etc.. or a VZ rep say "We ARE going to be pushing out 2.x to Eris handsets"

All I have heard is "we are looking into the possiblity of an upgrade for eris handsets" and that was from a press conference when the droid was launched.

Rumors are just that.. Rumors..
While I would LOVE 2.0 on my eris.. I'm not counting on anything now that Vz has hopped on the Nexus one train.

Love my Eris, especially after coming from a Palm 755p. Things will only get better but its always been Verizon's policy to uber-test devices/patches/updates before rolling them out. My Eris runs great and if it runs even better when a 2x comes out, so be it. I have a friend in IT a Verizon and he says the same thing; Verizon takes its time with testing. Their coverage is what keeps me as a customer. Nexus looks great but I'm still in the honeymoon stage with my Eris ;)

Google's Android 2.1: How It'll Change Your Phone - PC World

Neither Motorola nor HTC has announced an exact date for when specific Android handsets will receive the 2.1 upgrade. Motorola has, however, stated that all of its Android devices will be updated. HTC has mentioned the Droid Eris as an upgrade certainty and has suggested certain other models will also be included.

maybe we got 2.1 comin....
