Post All Eris 2.1 Update Rumors, News, and Updates HERE

If those are in fact true screen shots, it looks like HTC Sense has been built in to 2.1.

I can't put the eris down. This phone is awesome. The screen is beautiful. I love the touchscreen coming from an iPhone. I look forward to getting the 2.0 update.

Wow Li2327 - that says a lot from an Iphone user. You're not the first either, as my brother's boss went from Iphone to the HTC Hero (the newest one) and he feels the same.

They are. I didn't post them, but I have the software here. It was passed on by a friend so I could tinker with the kernel. It's for the GSM Hero...but all it should take to port it over to CDMA is a new kernel config as android 1.6 + is both GSM and CDMA..(in theory).

Yes HTC skipped 1.6 and 2.0 and went straight to 2.1...our kind of people :)
If/when I ever get a copy of it that runs worth a damn I'll certainly load it up and try it on my Hero.

i have an Eris on the way and my main draw was the ability to get 2.0 on there. the droid is a powerhosiue but too big.

coming from a linux guy, is there a change log from 1.5 to 2.0?

I didn't get anything but an img dump, not sure how it was originally leaked. When I sit down, extract and start looking at the kernel config I'll see what's different on the Linux side.

My guess - just a newer kernel version, with a few SELinux style patches and some HTC Hero/Desire specific hardware drivers compiled in. All it SHOULD take to get it to run on the Eris is building the driver for the prox sensor control and swapping the drivers for the screens....of course getting it loaded onto the Eris is the big stumbling block. Chances are it's going to have to wait until HTC and VZW release it. Good news is that by then an exploit should have been found that will get the Eris rooted as soon as VZW sends out the update, as now the CDMA Hero and the Eris will be running the same software. Good news for Eris and Cell South Hero owners.

Also - all this is in the hopes that the kernel has modules for CDMA radio compiled in it. This specific leak was for GSM. If not, a little trial and error is going to be needed.

understood. i would love to see or hear about any changes to the kernel, thats my favorite part of linux - seeing the changes. all this hoopla about the droid having 2.0 comes with nothing stated as an actual advantage -just "its new". it stilll tempts me but the form factor just doesnt do it for me.

EDIT - on the software side, would you see an advantage of the droid over the eris? thats almost irrelevant becasue when the Eris gets 2.0, it'll be a great device, im just curious about a timeline from vzw - who knows how long that will take.

i'd be very curious about any kernel changes.

First - Let me state I have access to a Droid and an Eris, but they are not activated on VZW. I dabble in electronic repair and new phones make great toys as well as tax write-offs. Think of my VZW devices as glorified iPod touchs. :D

For me, the biggest draw for 2.x is having bluetooth 2.1 . Voice on google nav is nice, but my car happens to have a great gps so I don't miss it.

The other "upgrades" - facebook native sync, Quick Contact, improved calendar, etc. have all been implemented in Sense. And IMO done better by HTC. I'm assuming the Sense/TouchFlo os models were in part a blueprint for increased function from 2.0 . If you don't mind waiting a second longer to open a new app, the Eris is a reasonable substitute for the droid, but done in a more elegant and "eye-candy" featured way.

Personally, after using it I could never go back to a device without the sense contact integration, even without bluetooth 2.1. Of course, YMMV and this is only one man's opinion.

As for kernel changes...don't look for too many. Phone manufacturers are much like OS maintainers.....you're going to get a big bloated kernel with emphasis on function rather than speed. Thankfully, trimming the bloat out is fairly easy. Once I get a look at the config, I'll post it up somewhere and send you a link, as I'm not sure I want to 'taint' this forum with leaked proprietary info.

In the meantime, any 2.x Linux distro with a standard toolchain and an ARM compiler can build a kernel to run Android. Maybe this will be a break for everyone and we can get a peek at HTC's kernel source since this is a dev test build, or this will prompt them to release the 1.5 source to comply with GNU licenses. Look for some amazing Android systems for newer HTC devices when that happens, much like what is being done with the Dream now.

lol let me state - lucky devil - getting new phones. lol

understood about bluetooth 2.1 but i dont use those so that one isnt a draw for me. I am always amazed at what the htc engineers throw together. i have seen the sense interface on many devoces over the years and it always has things that are always missed when i use a different device. i use a BB Tour now and boy is it stale. yuck.

i guess im just fearful that the droid will be the flagship and vzw will keep on updating it while the eris will get left behind - but then again, HTC never seems to leave a man behind lol.

just for the nerdy side of me, id sure like to see kernel changes - its always amazing to me to see where linux systems are going.

HTC posted on their Twitter page that the Eris is getting an upgrade and so I called Verizon and they confirmed this and the Rep said it will be Android 2.0

so gbhil - here is a question. With all these talks of updates and the like - in what you have seen - does battery life improve with the use of 2.0 on the Eris? I love the device... totally in love, so this is a curiosity thing more than a "i hate the battery life" question.

Well if that is the case the Droid is sitting at 2.0.1 if Htc or VZW is going to release 2.0 hopefully the bugs for 2.0 Droid are not in the Eris build.

FWIW - Navigation showed up in the regular Google maps update on my Mytouch 3g a week or 2 ago. You might update maps and see if your Eris supports it.
