After a few days of using the setup I posted here, I made some changes. I think this is a winner for me.

as I thought might be the case having the sliders all the way at the top and bottom of the screen was a drag.
it's a bit busier, but with a wife and four kids all with busy schedules I really like the calendar (which I can scroll through) on the lock screen.

I like this. What did you use to get it looking like that? Thanks!

The sliders are straight out of Widget Locker. If you resize them you can get them to go top to bottom rather than left/right.
The date/time is Elegante Clock on uccw.
The weather is eye in the sky.
The battery is circle battery widget.
The calendar is simple calendar widget.

Based off a theme I saw on MyColorScreen (think it was called Clean). I tweaked the Zooper Widget themes to my liking - the RSS widget from Themer seemed to fit in perfectly (nice and scrollable, too).
