I got this case from a company called Woodgraw, in the Ukraine:
I was a big fan of the wood veneer cases made by Rustek, another small company in Santa Cruz, but they recently pivoted to only making sustainable apparel. So in the course of searching for similar cases, I found Woodgraw, whose case design is almost identical to Rustek’s. One of the main differences is the ability to create a custom case for only $4 more (most of their cases go for $35.99, while custom is $39.99). It was easy to submit the design -- just include an image file with your order, and it's done. (In case you're wondering what the design is, it's the logo for Android Intelligence, the Android newsletter and community run by JR Raphael.)
I chose the wenge wood because I like the darker hue. The finish lends some grip, and the design itself even moreso, since you can feel more of an etched texture there. There’s a nice coarse texture on the sides that really improves grip as well. Camera bump is well-protected by a lip, and the main display is protected by lips at the top and bottom edges (but not the sides, due to the curved glass – this is typical of most cases).
The only very minor flaws I can see so far are that the buttons aren’t as raised as I would like, so it’s slightly harder to locate the button I’m looking for by feel alone. And there’s no lanyard hole (which I only need when traveling). But overall, I love this case!
Since shipping is from Ukraine, it took a little while to get to me. I ordered on 12/5, and it was delivered 12/23. Communication was superb – I got regular emails updating me on the status. There was one tiny glitch where I was supposed to get an email with an image of the custom case for my approval before they finalized the design, but the first email I got was that they were already preparing to ship. When I emailed them, they responded very quickly and showed the finished product, which looked great.
I was wondering if the shipment might be impacted by the war, but everything went smoothly. I told them I was happy to support their business during these incredibly tough times, and they were very gracious about it. I sure hope their business continues to thrive, because they’ll be my go-to case manufacturer now!
