Power Button "Dead"

So I've had my TB since release day, and have loved it every day since. I've rooted it, rommed it, and can go two days between charges. Love its size and functionality. But yesterday I realized by beloved has encountered a critical issue.

After being lazy an not plugging in my phone two nights ago to charge and let the battery die, I finally get around to getting it charged and turned back on. Normally not a big deal other than having to remove the battery after charging to get the phone to power up, but this time it just wasn't powering up at all. I charged it until the LED shined green, but still nothing. After noticing that the power button was feeling mushier than usual, I surmised that the power button has been physically damaged and no longer makes good contact. After fiddling with it on and off for three hours, I finally got the phone to boot and runs. Luckily, the flavor of BAMF I am running will allow me to wake the phone from the volume rocker so it isn't too big of an issue while the phone stays powered up.

So, it is a little less than a year old and I've got the monthly coverage from Verizon for Assurion. Is this an issue that can be fixed by taking into a VZW store for repair, or at worst they exchange for another device? I would really prefer not to have too file a claim with Assurion and pay the $100(+?) deductible...

My upgrade is in six days, but I love my phone so much that I am not really sold on the Galaxy Nexus and would like to see my TB live on for a while longer.

There is nothing a store or Verizon can do but replace the device with a CLNR. It should be covered under the manufacturers warranty, shouldn't need to use insurance. I'd call Verizon and start the process. They'll ship you a replacement which you can setup and confirm it works properly before returning the old one. Of course you should probably unroot and put a stock ROM back on it before returning it to avoid any issues.

This is not an insurance issue, it is a warranty issue. Call CS and they'll ship you another phone and you'll have it in 1-2 days. Or, a store should be able to replace it right away.

For me i would be careful about replacing it with another thunderbolt. i would worry that the replacement would not be as good as what i have. plus then you have to re root and re rom.
like you said the volume rocker to turn it on and the "lock it" app to turn off. i would really just use those.. just my opinion.

that's all good until you need your power button for something like turning your phone on if the battery died or getting into hboot. your best to get a replacement and then restore your nanadroid backup.

If you can get it replaced with a refurbished one, I would go that route. That way you won't burn your upgrade until you really want to upgrade.

I have restored my original image from like April of last year and have it restored down to as little as possible so I can hand it over and not worry about it. Will be heading to the nearest store in just a little bit.

your best bet is to get s-on before returning it to prevent any issues and magical 500 bill in your mailbox in 2 weeks.

adb reboot bootloader

I agree though that a replacement will probably be needed. You can probably "live" without a power button for a while, but eventually you'll need it.

I would love to see VZW to try to charge me for a replacement, citing a rooted device was the cause for hardware failure.

Got the refurbed phone in the mail, overnight of when I visited the store, and up and running again. The only complaint I have with the new phone is the kick stand alignment in the body, being just slight crooked and therefore just slightly raised. The new rooting tools make it even easier and faster now than when it was a manual process following instructions back in May of last year. Have BAMF Forever 1.10 loaded up and have been happy to have clone of my phone back up and running great like it always has.
