OK - so we just got back from the Sprint store (not much of a line - got there at 7AM and we were 6th in line - got in w/ the first group at 8am).

Anyway, the contacts transfer from my wife's Instinct to the EVO had no problems...

My Pre though??!? Different story! It kept giving some "phonebook not found" error message on their transfer machine. :( Even though my phonebook was working fine.

I then remembered that I had it in Developer mode (only 'patch' I ever tried was the speed increase to 800MHZ). I turned off Developer mode and still no joy.

Soooooooooooooooo - my wife is thrilled w/ her EVO, I'm kind of annoyed because I have do a 1:1 transfer of every freaking contact.

Anyone know of a way to transfer contact info from a Pre -> EVO? Is there something on the Sprint.com site to backup a Pre (and then restore to a new phone)?

I'm going to start searching around but thought I'd check in to see if any others were having issues.

I love you WebOS, I'm just sick of your 'body' - your soul is beautiful, but your outside needs some work. Please don't hate me for that!! :D

Just sync your contacts with your gmail account and then sync your evo with gmail.

I haven't picked up my Evo yet, but doesn't it automatically sync with Google contacts like the Pre does? You should be able to just sign into your Google account & have it sync your contacts.

Interesting. I never setup a gmail account on my Pre but I'll give that a shot. I'm assuming - HOPING - i can just do that via wifi?? Because the Pre itself (phone / 3G wise) has been deactivated.

The wifi IS still working though.

Same problem with my move from the pre to the evo. Preordered at best buy, they couldn't transfer my contacts, went over to Sprint who couldn't do it either, neither could radio shack. I exported my contacts using the patch in preware which only transferred about 10 contacts. Sprint told me that they should have their cellbrite(sp) systems back up today

Yeah, it should. I have a pre and I'm pretty positive it syncs over wifi.

@shibumi, you may want to consider applying the webOS Meta Doctor. When I deactivated a Pre after a swap, the deactivated Pre eventually went into the activation mode and wouldn't let me use it over wifi.

Also, if you've got your contacts in your Palm Profile, adding a gmail sync is not going to migrate the contacts from the Palm Profile to google. It'll just keep the existing contacts in the Palm Profile. Migrating them to google is possible, but difficult. It's certainly not something that your average user will be able to do. YMMV.

Are your contacts all on your Palm Profile? Regardless there is a patch in Preware that allows you to send all of your contacts in an email. You can then upload them to google and sync them that way. Hope that helps.

Do what I did:

Enable developer mode
Use WebOS Quick Install to load Preware on the Pre
Use Preware to install the patch that exports contacts to a Vcard
Install the Vcard on your Gmail
Problem Solved!

I did this ahead of time. I wasn't going to take any chances with not getting my contacts :)

I would do this. You can then import your contacts through Google.com and then sign into your account on your Evo. This is what I did.

Yep, looks like this IS the way I'll have to go. I added my gmail account to my Pre - said it was syncing, then I even did a sync all - but - none of my Pre contacts were added to my Gmail contacts (checking via PC). I'll give Preware a shot.

Thanks for all of the tips!

I have a gmail account so all I had to do was log onto my gmail account and it added my contacts that were on my Pre to my Evo. This is one awesome phone...

I understand that this is a Google, (Android Phone). But can you sync with a Yahoo account that has all your contacts in it?

Huh, I was in Developer mode and have tons of patches and they didnt have a problem syncing my contacts over...

I used my gmail then sync'd as I was walking out of the store. Got in the car, checked, everything transferred - calendar & contacts. I backed up my pre to gmail last night night, so was ready to go.
