The Rezound was also competing with the Razr since they were released the same week. I'm sure Verizon bought some additional TV time for advertising both but it limited each device. From what I seen on TV it looked like they had more weight on the Razr.
Maybe they won't advertise the hell out of the Nexus but I would think with the holidays coming up they would put up some big bucks to sell as many as possible. I guess we'll be finding out soon and I don't really care what they do as long as I get my new toy this week.

I see the "hip-hop Matrix/Inception" commercial a couples times each evening. I almost see as many of them as the Razr commercials.

Picking up my Galaxy Nexus on 12/8 from Verizon Store
The Verizon Rep that I spoke with in the store on 12/4 stated that she had a list of people that she would call once she received word on the release,she added my name and I thought nothing else of it. This morning I had a missed call/voicemail and it was her saying that she would have my Galaxy Nexus set to the side on Thursday(12/8) and I could pick it up then. I didnt believe what I was hearing so I called the number back, she answered and I told her who I was, she did confirm that they would be selling them on 12/8 and since I was on the list, mine was reserved and she did mention something about "preorder" but since I was excited over the news period I missed it, so maybe she was saying the list of people she had are considered "preorders" and the actual release may be 12/9 either way Im Good & now these next 2 days cant get here quick enough.

VZW won't market this phone until it is released. You guys need to understand they want money. Advertising this phone before release is like telling everyone wait 3 days to buy from us, & don't buy the RAZR or Rezound. VZW doesn't care which phone they sell you as long as it's a smartphone. The bulk of the population won't care about the differences.
But if they go into a store, or see ads that say "Nexus Coming soon" all it's telling people is don't buy today. That's why VZW doesn't announce things way in advance, unless they're a notably different product. Trust me, Charges and Bionics wouldn't still be so expensive if they weren't selling. People just don't know, and VZW certainly doesn't want them to. If everyone had wait-for-the-next-thing-itis (like you quadcorers) they'd never make a sale. The best way to cure this is to not let people know that there is a next best thing. That is what they try the hardest to do.

stores break rules all the time, because stores are run by people, and some people are stupid.
if enough stores receive stock today, i'm sure there will be at least one store who'll put them for sale before they realize they weren't supposed to.

I just called back and asked my Verizon rep that since Im upgrading 2 lines with the Nexus can she go ahead and sell me 2, she said they are in the back and she would speak to her manager and call me back in less than 5 minutes....Im currently waiting. I will post the store number here shortly once she calls me back and lets me know, she did want to reconfirm that " I would come in and activate if she could sell before the 8th" and I said Hell yeah
