Pre to Evo Users.. how is experience?

2. Universal search. WEBOS handles this so much better, it's just easier to text, browse the web, or open a program thru uni-search on the pre. That is something i will never get over losing.

From the Home screen on Android, just hit the Search button. It works just like the WebOS Universal Search, in my opinion. Even better, since I don't have to slide open a keyboard (personal preference).

Oh yea in addition to my previous post, the first app i downloaded was fring and video chat is awesome!!!! This is what separates this phone from others. I was video chatting with people over 3g with little lag.

1) Do you regret your decision to leave pre for the Evo?

Nope...not even a shade of regret.

2) What are some of the major improvements with evo compared to pre?

• Customizatoin - There are simply more ways to make your phone unique and fit what you need. I can load my homepage with apps and make it look like an iphone or I can put some nice widgets and make it look a little more fancy. I'm also have many options for whatever. For example, I wanted to add a new keyboard, so I downloaded Swype (which is awesome). I wanted to try a new SMS app and got hancent. I wanted a new browser and got Dolphin. If I didn't like those either, there were more available to choose from. The pre is extremely limited. You only get 4 items to choose for quick launch and the rest is jammed into 3 menu screens...which leads me to...
• Matured OS - Android has been around longer and has more of the kinks worked out. To make my pre enjoyable, I had to go to patches. Whenever I had to strip my phone down for any reason, it was very bland. Very simple things like character count on texts required me to patch the phone. I like that this phone is relatively ready to go out of the box. (Not that aren't some things that have me scratching my head, like organizing bookmarks...why can't I reorder them on my smartphone without some other app?)
• Apps - There are more apps on adroid...and better ones. I'm not a guy who downloads everything like apps that sound like a shotgun if you shake your phone, but I found plenty of useful ones that I didn't have on my pre.
• Hardware - This doesn't need much explanation. The phone itself is simply better hardware in every way possible.

3) what are some of the major problems with evo compared to pre?

• Multi-tasking smoothness? - Don't know how to say it, but the pre simply does multitasking the right way. It looks better and is easy. Android does have multi-tasking though and it is effective once you get the hang of how to do it.
• gestures - They are easy and efficient. I miss those...

4)Andriod vs WebOS? Who wins and why?
Android cause it has the kinks worked out. If WebOS picks it up in the next year, we can revisit this question.

5)How is the Google Voice app?
Sorry, can't help here. I don't really use it even though I have an account.

Do you have Documents To Go installed? Maybe that's why you have a "Save As" option.

From what I can see, unless one has an app installed that can handle the attachment (with a Save option), you can't save anything that the GMail app downloads/previews (except pictures it seems).

So, if for example I receive a .rar file or a .qif file, and I don't have an appropriate app installed for viewing (and saving) the document or file, I can't save it with the GMail app.

If I'm wrong about this and there is another way, please enlighten us.

yeah i do have Doc To Go installed. but doesn't everyone have Quick Office too preloaded? anyway, yes all i've tried were file formats that the EVO can handle. usually that's all i get anyway - Word, Excel, PDF, pictures, etc. haven't tested anything else. if on rare occasion i get some obscure file format - i don't mind going to Google.com for it.

BUT to say that the EVO Gmail App can't handle attachments is very misleading. it can handle 99% of what a normal human will get. and you could probably add an app reader for any obscure file formats you get if you really wanted to.

I don't get a "Save As" option when previewing (either Adobe Acrobat or the stock PDF viewer). I've tried long-presses, menu, etc. both within the GMail app and in the viewer.

Are you running Android 2.1 or Froyo?

2.1 with Docs To Go. you should download it. they have a free app reader version. i bought the full version for $15. 3.0 is coming soon with free upgrade.

i also have ASTRO installed. i think this can read almost anything???

It is indeed accurate to say that the GMail app doesn't handle attachments. It passes the handling on to other installed apps. The only attachments it handles itself are images.

In any case, I will be either upgrading QuickOffice to the full version or buying DTG. Now that we know what the deal is with the GMail app, we can make an informed decision.

Oh, and ASTRO won't help unless you can get the email client to actually save the attachment down to a folder.

NOPE.

OS is far more developed.

EVO is a resource hog. Once you disable some apps and reduce using some of the radios, battery life is improved.

4)Andriod vs WebOS? Who wins and why?
Android wins. Like I said, it's way more developed. WebOS has huge potential, but it's just not there yet.

It's great. Love not having to dial voicemail. Love transcriptions.

I am considering making a move from the Pre to Evo or maybe just adding another line to my plan to get the EVO.

I cant imagine leaving WebOS and the active community of preware

hey there

1) No I don't regret my decision at all. I was so afraid I'd miss the physical keyboard, but I don't. I like that I dont have to slide my phone anymore.

2) Android is a great OS.. WebOS is too. Some features on the Evo are similar. The notifications system is different, but it is still quite similar. All your notifications appear at the top instead of the bottom, and its a swipe down menu.

3) Not everyone likes a touchscreen keyboard, but the Evo's keyboard is very accurate. In landscape mode, its really easy and fun to use. Battery life can be a drag if you don't manage the phone properly, but the Pre had its battery issues as well. I haven't found any major problems yet, but I've only had it a day.

4)Each OS has its pros and cons. I can't really decide between the two. Both are very user friendly. The switch to Android really hasn't been that hard for me at all.

5) well.. I haven't tried it. But Google Voice Search is pretty awesome lol.

If you do switch, I wish you the best. I think you will enjoy it quite a bit

I don't regret it at all, but I do miss some points of my PRE. Now, I'm addicted to my EVO.

WebOS is definitely an interesting platform and is visually slick. However, Android is more feature rich than any other platform I have seen and I have just about used them all. The big difference between Android device and Palm and that you can choose your favorite hardware manufacturer. That makes a big difference. If WebOS had HTC or Samsung hardware, it may be a different story. Android just seems to do everything right. And with all of the Google services out there, it is very difficult to choose another platform.

Yeah, I sure don't miss my ragged Pre as far as the hardware goes. You could look at that phone the wrong way and it would fall apart.

I broke the screen on my Evo and have had it in for repairs for three weeks. I only had my Pre to go back to. It has been a very painful three weeks so far. Seriously miss my Evo.

I was afraid to switch too, but I dont regret it ONE BIT.
I miss the cards and swiping. but thats it. im loving swype way more than the physical keyboard. And the apps are amazing.

The PRE is great... but the EVO is just better. Make the switch !!

i like it but multitasking sucks, no touchstone charging, and its hard to modify the software because you have to root it first before you do any thing and the community kinda sucks for help, they all talk to smart for a user that comes from a pre. and watch ill probly get some troll that will comment on what im saying garanteed.

I for one am not looking back....the Pre was good but once I got the EVO-lution I have found a phone that fits my style...my co-worker still has his pre. It's funny holding the pre after using the EVO cause it feels so tiny... and I don't miss the too many cards either.... enjoy...u will not want to go back.
