Preventing random Notification popups

Although I initially didn't like it, I now really like the no banner of what message you're getting in the status bar. Just a symbol for the type of message. I felt much 'safer' handing my people my phone without worrying about getting some random text with a popup that they'd see/read while looking at the phone. Now that I have the T2 I get random popups from both SMS and gmail. This happens on the lock screen as well. I'd prefer just to have the symbol show up on the lock screen, but randomly I get a gmail or SMS popup that shows up on the lock screen or when in the phone. I've had this with several different SMS apps and have the pop ups unchecked. The odd thing is that it isn't consistent. Sometimes I'll get a popup and sometimes just the symbol will show up. I think its the same with Facebook. Anyone else have this or know what I can do to fix it?

Change your interruption settings in the sounds and notifications. If you just want to stop the heads up notifications you will need to download an app like headsoff.

Sounds like you're referring to Moto display. You can change these settings under the Moto app. Display settings offer options for what you typically see and you can also block by individual apps.

Maybe I'm not getting the idea across.

Sometimes I get this (what I'm wanting)

And sometimes I get something closer to this, where the banners briefly popup and then go back to the above image. I don't want the details to popup, but it doesn't do it consistently. Seems completely random.

Same randomness while in the phone. Sometimes I just get an icon in the status bar and sometimes I get a banner popup along with it. Again, randomly seemingly.

You gotta poke around your notification settings. The first screen you showed is the moto display which can be customized from the moto app. The second is the lock screen. You can change the notification settings on that from the settings, sounds and notifications, when device is locked and app notifications. As I stated earlier, if you want to stop the popups from gmail and text that show at the top of your screen while you are using the phone you will need to download headsoff.

Go to moto app, choose display, select how much detail shows and choose hide sensitive notification content.

Should there be a third option here? I thought from my first T2 there was a third option. Everything works great on that phone.

Just occurred to me, do you have a screen lock active? You may have to have one to get the third option available.

I have it set to swipe. Same as I did on my initial T2 and I had all 3 options there. I thought something seemed missing here.

Is display setting set to moto display rather than ambient in settings? Running out of suggestions here.

Correct. Moto, not Ambient. I'd like to think that I've gone through all of the settings and its set up the same as on my previous phone that didn't do the popups. I did go ahead and add headoff, but I don't get why the popup banners are random. That's a big part that doesn't make sense. Sometimes I get the banner and then it resolves to the icon and sometimes just the icon shows up.

Not all apps show the popup. The developer has to build that option into the app, so some have it and some don't. Google did away with the status bar ticker, which would show text in the status bar when the notification first came in, and added the popup. If you are saying that sometimes gmail will show a popup and sometimes it won't, I have no idea why.

Yes, I think exactly that. I know they got rid of the ticker. I was initially annoyed by the loss of that functionality, but grew to like it with its increased privacy. That's what annoying me now - I get random banner pop-ups that I didn't get with my last 2 phones (T and T2) with Lollipop. I'd take it to the Verizon store, but the reps likely don't even know that setting is there.

In any case, I installed headsup app so maybe that will fix it. Thanks for the um, headsup, on that. :)
