Appears to be manual rooting instructions. You should try it.... At least then we'll have a more exact identification of what is going wrong

he used optiauto and gets all the way to step C after installing the update.zip with the expected Fail the error in the OP appears... also discovered with the error still on the screen he can use adb to su and gets a # however mounting sdcard or system both fail

What ROM are you currently on. The update.zips have issue with aosp based ROMs.

we were trying from ZVD stock rooted.

Did you ever try another computer or uninstall & reinstalling the phone drivers?

nope, haven't tried either of those. haven't had time. I don't think I will either, I'm ordering either an htc one x or galaxy s3 this weekend. Which one should I go for? the one x is cheaper...

Using Bobzhomes recovery, I flashed the update.zip of zvj today. it's weird because after doing that, I still had Bobzhome's recovery!!! ?? but I had no service...So I don't know how I'd go about fixing that....

Yeah bobzhome'a recovery just ignores the radio update. You have to use stock zvd or zvh recovery

Hey just thought of something... I think I read zvj roms work on zvh right? He could update to zvh root it with sons of korhol utility and be able to run zvj roms no problem
