problems with gmail - I keep getting a message saying "couldn't sign in"

I keep getting a system message saying 'couldn't sign in', but when I check my email it's all current. I took the account off and put it back on again and the password is correct and all that, but it keeps sending this message and it is driving me nuts. When I click it, it says "the username or password for [email address removed] is incorrect. Update them now?". But it isn't incorrect. ARGH. Does anyone know what this is about?

I also had the same problem but now solved. You have probably restricted data usage of google play services. Try enabling it and then refresh the gmail app. It worked for me.
