I will most likely do a complete factory data reset once we get Oreo my question is what is the proper way to do it or the preferred method---- in other words leave the SIM card in? leave the SD card in? or remove one or both? reboot or factory data reset from the settings or from the wipe cache section of the startup?

A factory reset shouldn't affect the SIM nor the SD card, but I have seen posts about SD cards that seem to have gotten corrupted during the factory reset, so it would be reasonable to remove the card beforehand. Make sure you Unmount it first, in the Settings>Storage menu.

I don't believe there's any difference between doing the factory reset from the Settings>Backup & Reset menu vs the Recovery menu.

Also, make sure you remove your Google account from the phone (in the Settings>Accounts menu) prior to the reset -- otherwise, the phone will consider it an unauthorized reset, and I'm not sure if it will go through to completion.

Run a Smart Sync to your computer first.

I don't see the beta phase ending until after the new year.

The Galaxy S9 is of course slated for early 2018 and they 8.0.0, and not 8.1 which the Pixel 2 receiving, to clear up issues.

Try update and wiping the cache first. I've needed to wipe the system twice with the betas.

A clean install has few risks, less complicated

Great advice thanks guys. One more stupid question do you update first and then factory data reset or factory data reset and then update does it matter?

Some people do it before and after update but I've never found it necessary. I usually wipe cache before a big OS update just to clean things up, then factory reset after I update and do a clean install. That's just me and I think I've avoided some problems. Others will say there's no need to do either.

FDR is not necessary but you'd be surprised how much junk gets in the phone and an FDR will clean that out. I have had better success doing an FDR after a major update. Clearing cache partition is also good.

I have always done FDR's in recovery (former root a holic). I was always under the impression that it was better to do an FDR from recovery. However with FRP, I guess you have to do it in settings???

Also, if you've encrypted your microSD card, unencrypted before removing it. Then reencrypt after doing the reset. I didn't unencrypt the card before doing an FDR and ended up having to reformat the card.
