So im having my g\f buy me a tablet for my birthday and im pretty sure im going to go with the nexus 7. Before im go ahead and have her order it i just wanted to get some feed back from nexus users on the forum. How do you like it over all? Have you rooted and if so ho2s that goin for ya? Any pros and cons? Any feedback would be awesome, cheers fellas.

A year later it's still the best 7" tablet out there. The one thing I would have liked is a HDMI out. Keep in mind, we're expecting a refreshed version soon with updated specs, better screen, etc. so depending on when your birthday is, you may want to hold on for that. If you're staying in the 7" range, this is by far the best value.

In the 10" space, there are the Nexus 10, the Asus Transformer series (optional keyboard dock that extends battery life and gives you a physical keyboard) or the iPad in that space.

Oh, there is one other thing that doesn't work natively on the Nexus 7, which is Amazon Prime Videos. I'm not sure if you use that or not, but if you do it may be a good idea to add the Kindle Fire HD or iPad Mini to consideration. I really dislike those options because they both lack the Google Play store and apps, but if Amazon Videos isn't an issue, Nexus 7 wins against both hands down, in my opinion.

I've owned the N7 since I preordered it during the announcement last year and I've given several of them to family members.

Yup, great tablet, but hold off. Rumors have it there is going to be a new Nexus 7 announcement this month.

I agree with holding off. the 7 needs an upgrade with more memory, faster cpu, faster cpu, and higher resolution display.

Love my nexus 7, rooting is easy and adds a few neat abilities, only thing missing is HDMI out. if it had that it would he perfect

Had a N7 since August & biggest issue is wifi not connecting even with plenty of signal. Also laggy performance. Seems to me that Google uses N7 as a Beta test, especially the software. I want more software fixes before adding features.

One of the reason you buy a Nexus is to get the new OS and apps as soon as they are available. This gets you the newest features first, but also means there will be more bugs. With that said I have no wifi connection issues and my performance is fine. The only time it gets laggy is when I have a bunch of applications running at once.

I like my Nexus 7, but if I'd bought my Nexus 4 first, I most likely would have passed on the 7.

Why? Because frankly, it is a slower, less capable Nexus 4 with a bigger screen. And while some extra screen real estate is nice, out of the 110+ plus apps I have installed on it, I can count on one hand the ones that actually look or feel any different. IMHO, this is abysmal for a tablet. Bear in mind this is not the Nexus 7's fault, but the sorry state of development for it... which I keep hoping will change - but so far has not. The lastest reminder of this is the official Roland Garros app for the French Open, which works great on my Nexus 4, but isn't even compatible with the Nexus 7.

For an extra hundred or so on a Nexus 4 you get a phone, faster CPU, more RAM, better rez display, back facing 8mp camera with 1080p video, and higher build quality.

Just something to think about. BTW, I still use my N7... but pretty much only when the N4 has to go on the charger. (c;

I also have the N4 and the N7, but I always use my N7 when I am at home or at work. For one, using the tablet saves the battery life of my phone, so that is a huge plus. Most apps are completely identical in terms of functionality, but having the larger screen is big difference for me. I would love if the N7 had the same stats as my N4 though, which is probably why I will be upgrading when they finally announce the new N7.

I sold my N7 in anticipation for the next Nexus. Mine was just a little laggy since 4.2 came out. The new one... It's gonna be great. That said, when it didn't come out at I/O, I opted to try the iPad Mini. I know, I know, it's not an iOS forum. But the major advantage of the iPad is the amount of video apps. I'm talking about Amazon Instant Video, CBS, ABC, Nickelodeon. I think gaming is better on the Mini due to the form factor and the fact that iOS still gets some games first (Plants vs Zombies 2).

However, if you don't care about any of that, the current Nexus 7 is fantastic.

Well i did in fact order the n7, just came in yesterday. Patience is something i lack terribly lol. I applied for the amazon store card and got zero interest for 6 months, add next day shipping and im one happy man! So far i really like it, some things i still use my gs3 for but the nexus will mostly be for work. HDMI out would be a nice feature but i can deal, i weighed my options and found this best for my needs. Not to big, not to small, 32g and most importantly it isnt made by apple! Horrible waste of money those ipads are, no offense if you have one, i just cant justify spending that kind of money for a name. Anyway im guna go lurk around the root stickies and get this bad boy rocking at full potential, thanks for the feed back everyone!

I bought a Nexus 4, then a 7. That was back in February. What's different? Yes there is a difference in how I feel after today, this very day. Why?

I bought a iPad Mini. today. I had it on reserve since Tuesday. Planned on MAYBE going down to get it at Micro Center Wednesday but Didn't feel right about it. Made up my mind to actually go last night and today I did.

And what about it you ask?

Best decision I ever made. Why you keep asking? It's fast. moving between screens and apps is fast. I unlock the iPad using my four digit code and it's unlocked instantly and ready to go. I think the colors in the screen quality are about the same. Doesn't matter that it's not retina display or lower pixel density as it's barely noticeable.

Apps. Wow. several of my favorite apps were barely even built for the Android platform. Take my local news app, 9news. On the Android, it has just basic features and you click on a video to play it. On the iPad, my God every story is interactive and the weather maps actually have layers like Google maps and you can move about the map just Google Maps to see what the weather is like. I can also watch the newscast when it is live in the app, not possible in the Android version.

There are many other apps as well that were given extra treatment such as Twitter and SiriusXM. It's like they didn't think Android was worth all the effort.

I think I fell in love with iOS all over again. For the first time since February, my Nexus 7 will be spending the night at home alone and i'll be taking my iPad with me to work. my feelings may be changing with the Nexus 4 as well. I still enjoy using my iPhone 4S.

I chose the black 32GB LTE version with AT&T. It's a beautiful thing this iPad mini.

Heh heh. For the most part I agree with you, but less than thrilled with just a smaller screen image on the mini (same pixels as the original ipad, just fit to the smaller screen). Some elements are too small, especially with presbyopia thrown in.

But the app experience is better on ios, not quite so much on phones, but way better on tablets, and I have toyed with the idea of swapping out my Nexus 7 for an ipad. About the only thing I'd miss is the open file system, predictive keyboard, and pocketcast syncing (but the latter at least is only a matter of time).

I think Google is working hard on making things easier / better for developers, but it will still take time to see better apps. While it generally results in higher quality apps and things that actually work (cough - cough... Airplay, bluetooth, etc.), Apple's restrictions and sandboxing are annoying at best and I am happy to be rid of them (especially on my phone).

Have fun with your new ipad!

You mention the keyboard. When I get home tonight, I'll post about what I hate about the Android keyboard and what I've noticed about the iPad keyboard. I have to leave now. I'll also post up some side by side comparisons of a few apps with the iOS and Android versions. Some, it's night and day.

The biggest reason my iPad Retina sits is iOSes inability to run multiple applications at the same time and sandboxing that prevents apps from sharing data. The best thing about iOS is the apps. Better selection, and better quality, and higher prices, but you get what you pay for.

My N7 is so slow, nvidia chipset is bad bad bad!

Also battery life is terrible. Barely get 1 day standby with 2 hours screen time - even with turning WiFi off during sleep.

I wouldn't get one tbh

My 16GB N7 has been outstanding, my comparison points being an Asus Transformer Prime, Kindle Fire, and Motorola Xoom which I own and my wife's Galaxy 10.1. Great performance and battery life - it gets more use than the other devices combined. I bought it as something of an impulse buy with intent to return it if I didn't really care for it. Ended up quite the opposite.

I'd go with a iPad mini. Don't get me wrong the nexus 7 is a good device but, the iPad is better and not much more cash. Take for instance deleting photo albums, deleting old gmail's you have to go online from a PC and remove them from there. Also my peeve at the moment is the local app it won't show you the nearest thing it'll only show you what your circles think of it or how its rated, crazy. Yes you do get early releases, they got a word for that beta testing, no thanks if I'm testing something I want paying or compensating for it. Most of early releases are buggy. A friend once summed it up perfectly. I said "yeah but I get 4.2.1 earlier than you do" he replied "yeah and with a bit of luck it'll work by the time I get it" I felt devastated because I knew he was right.

"deleting old gmail's you have to go online from a PC and remove them from there"

what? you can do it right from the Gmail app. Just long press and use the 3 dots to hit delete. Or you can just go into the settings and enable the delete to appear on the ribbon.
