Push notification issue

I download facebook messenger to talk to my friend who doesn't have cell service but I don't seem to get a notification on my lock screen. It comes up says he sent me a message, but the little message sign that stays on the lock screen never shows. Anyone else have this issue?

I am not seeing any push notifications. Makes it hard to know what I need to check.

Other than emails using the fire phone email app and text messages I don't get notifications OR I get them 1/2 hour to an hour past when my samsung tablet tells me stuff. Pretty lame that they couldn't figure this out before they released this phone.
