Push Notifications Stop Only on WiFi

Hello,

I haven an HTC U11 with Android Oreo (8.0). It's been a GREAT phone, and I've had it just about two years now. A couple of weeks ago I noticed that my push notifications stopped coming in, so I rebooted my phone, and they started working again. Just thought it was an intermittent glitch.

A few days later, it happened again, so before I decided to reboot like last time, as a test, I turned off my WiFi, and now I was connected via my LTE. As soon as I did that, all of my push notifications started to come in, which means that the problem is only when I'm connected to WiFi. Just to be sure my WiFi internet connection itself was working, I turned it back on, and opened up a web page on my phone's browser, which it downloaded in lightning speed, so that confirmed that my connection itself was working properly. I then rebooted my phone while it still was connected to WiFi, and push notifications started working again.

It just happened again, and the only thing that fixed it was rebooting, so I decided to make this post. The bottom line is that problem only exists with my push notifications while I'm connected to WiFi, and the only thing that fixes it for the time being is a reboot. I appreciate any help on how to permanently correct this. Again, I've had this phone for almost two years now, but this is the first time I've had this issue. Thank you.

Interesting -- I just saw this other thread about the same issue, but on an S8: https://forums.androidcentral.com/s...-no-notifications-new-router.html#post6539376. I wonder if there might be some 3rd party app causing this. Does it happen in Safe Mode as well? https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...estart-phone-in-safe-mode.html&token=hRHhggwU

Thanks, Diddy. I read that other thread, and that guy has a different issue than mine. My router's not blocking notifications. They do work MOST of the time. Every once in a while, intermittently, I notice that I haven't received notifications in a while, so I turn off the WiFi on my phone, to switch to LTE, and they arrive. I then reboot my phone, turn WiFi back on, and receive notifications again.

But yeah, a possibility is that it could be a third-party app causing it. I would have to go through a lot of trial and error with uninstalling apps to figure it out, but the problem is that it happens so intermittently. However, when it does happen, I'm usually waiting for an important message from a potential customer from my Thumbtack.com account (Thumbtack pairs buyers and professionals in many different categories through their service). The app is a good way to know if you get those messages. I also have email notifications turned on too for them, as a back-up. Both rely on push notifications so this is where the problem arises.

That's what happened yesterday. I had logged into my email account from my desktop browser and saw the email notification from a person's message, but the app never sounded off nor did the email notification in my phone. Come to find out that all my push notifications weren't working again, so I turned WiFi off just to see, and they all came in. So I then rebooted, and notifications were working again on WiFi. Who knows when it will happen again.

As far as it occurring in Safe Mode, it probably won't happen for a while after I restart in it since I have to reboot into Safe Mode, and anytime I reboot, it clears the issue for the time being anyway. I'm not sure if I could leave my phone in Safe Mode that long just to be able to see if it happens again. I mean sometimes it goes for an entire day without it happening, and sometimes even longer. It's just one of those really annoying issues that is going to be hard to pin down, but hopefully I'll get lucky enough to resolve it. Thanks again.

Hmm. Does this only happen on your home wi-fi, or on any wi-fi network? If it's only on your home network, then it might be some kind of router firmware issue. Have you checked the router manufacturer's website to see if there are any firmware updates available? If not, can you test if the problem happens on different wi-fi networks? (Or consider replacing your current router.)

Thanks, Diddy. Yeah, I think you might be on to something here because I haven't seen it happen on another Wifi network. There is only one other Wifi network that I ever use besides my home one.

The router/modem (all-in-one) I have is an old Arris model, which is my own that I bought (I don't lease it from my provider). When I give them the make and model, my Internet Provider's tech department always tells me that it's an 'end of life' modem. There are no firmware updates available on Arris' website for this particular model modem/router.

When I saw this, I recently contacted their tech department through an online chat and the representative told me that if there are any updates, they would be automatically installed by my Internet provider. Well, I don't think that's happening since my I.P. obviously isn't supporting this model anymore. So, if this keeps happening, looks like I'll have to do what you said and get a new modem/router.

Come to think of it, I'm not only having the intermittent no push notifications issue with my phone, but sometimes I notice that my phone is not connected to Wifi, and then in the available networks, it shows that it's continuously trying to reconnect to it, with 'IP configuration failure' as a message after each attempt. The only thing that fixes it is if I unplug my modem/router for at least 30 seconds, and then plug it back in to restart it. This issue is probably because of the outdated firmware situation too.

So yeah, it's probably time for a new one lol. Really sucks because it's been a great modem/router for the time I've had it, until these issues started arising recently. Thanks for your input and help again.

If you're not ready to upgrade your modem/router, you could get a separate router, hook that up to the Arris, and turn off the Arris's own router functions. Routers are pretty cheap, as long as you're not looking for the latest and greatest.

Thanks, Diddy. That's a good point too. I have a seller on eBay that I've bought my last couple modem/routers from over the past five or six years, and they only are about $25 or $30. Thanks for the tip, I'll consider that as an option though.
