I want to root my phone so that I can use it to wireless tether. I want to use Revolutionary to root cause I didn't want to wipe my phone and it seems pretty easy according to this video How to Root - HTC Thunderbolt (No Data Wipe! Newest & Fastest) - YouTube

Can I just do what they did on that video and install wireless tether/barnacle wifi or do I need to do something else like load a custom rom? Sorry if it's a dumb question but i'm very new to this

No.you don't need a custom rom. Stock rooted will do what you need. Revolutionary is every bit as easy a it looks in the video.

Agreed, you don't NEED to flash a custom ROM, but I'd strongly recommend it. What the Devs are able to do with these phones is crazy cool. Might as well take full advantage of your rooted phone! ;-)

Thanks, maybe I'll flash a custom rom in the future. I need to try rooting it first :)

I got lost at the part he was asked about downloading clockwork. He copied.something on the computer then seemed to copy the same file back on the phone (su file?) I know this is way ez compared to manual yet I'm still baffled. If I watched someone do it in right in front of me I think I'd get it on the third try. I know I would have gone into freakout mode when the program crashed due to his firewall.

BTW, does this work in 64 bit Windows 7?

I think part of my problem is not understanding what each step actually does. I feel like a.monkey trying to type Shakespeare.

Using revo is easy once your rooted it will ask you if you wanna install clockwork mod says yes and it will if cmd crashes don't freak out just rerun revo and it will say it already rooted would you like to download clokwork mod says yes and it will work. Now it should work for Windows 7 64 bit. Also for the firewall issue just do this find the revo executive file right click run as admin and your firewall should not block the program. Hope this helps

rooted it today and it took no more than 15 mins, it went flawless. Now I can use wireless tether for my tablet :) thanks again

I rooted to get wireless tether also, I already had easytether...but its nice to not need to carry a cable all the time or to transfer files to let someone else use my easytether. I used stock rooted for about 3 days before I tried Das Bamf Sense 3.0 RC 4.9 and absolutely fell in love. All the custom roms are a bit different so you might have to try a few before you find what fits you perfectly, but pretty much any custom rom is better than the stock. I like HTC sense, i use the news and friendstream widgets so I like BAMF Sense (you can get roms that are more vanilla android, gingerbread, froyo, sense 2.1, sense 3.0, debloated, pretty much anything you can customize has been customized in a ROM somewhere)...ill switch to their Uber ROM when it comes out of preview. Welcome to the rooted world...your life will never be the same.

I used revolutionary with a Windows 7 64bit laptop and had no problems.
