Question about using sd card backup via smartswitch

I want to use the sd card backup to switch to my new s9 but I need to know if I need to go through the transfer process when I insert the sd card and power on the phone?

Yes. After inserting the card on the new phone, you should open SmartSwitch on the new phone and use restore from card.
