My phone's been rooted for about nine months now, custom recovery, Gelato rom and Ginger kernal. I've been wanting to wipe it and start off fresh, get rid of anything over the lifetime of the phone that may have been slowing it down. I keep seeing posts saying not to factory reset through settings but never seen anything about doing it through recovery. Has anyone tried this, is there an alternate method? I'd like to know before I potentially brick my phone.

You can wipe data/factory reset through the recovery without bricking your phone. However you will then have to install the stock ROM then install your custom ROM and kernel.

Alright, thank you. So I wipe then install the stock ROM before I even restart the phone, correct? Also, will I need to wipe the caches as well or will those also be done with the wipe?

Just wipe then install stock ROM then reboot. You can also wipe caches but I think data wipe/factory reset wipes everything but sdcard.
