IMHO, this phone is a step forward in idling efficiency - I use battery saver, except the screen dimming feature of that. My old Moto X (2013) would drain 3% an hour, just idling. The HTC 1 M9 is sipping 1% per hour. Finally a phone that is as thrifty as my (work) iPhone on idle.
However, it's no good if you don't use it and screen on, it sucks more than I would expect, almost a percent per minute. I still need to do a proper comparison of screen on & off and a video test; if it won't do two full-length movies (as my Moto X would) I'll be disappointed. Right now I really wonder if I will. Still, I love the phone, its a huge step up in presence, performance and interface than the 2013 'X'. It gets through the day, with light use, but have not had a heavy day yet. I'll be taking a battery pack on my full-day trips.
Also - I have a quick charger. I might be using it a lot
42% to 56% = 14%: 15 min ~ 1% per minute
42% to 72% = 30%: 30 min ~1% per minute
72% to 98% = 26%: 39 min ~0.6%/min to top off
