Hey guys completely new to this and was hoping I could get some answers. I've read some articles about unlocking and rooting. Now being that I've had my nexus for a few weeks now I do have apps installed that I would like to carry over when unlocked/rooted and flashed with aokp. Here is what I have done so far. I have downloaded NRT v1.6.2 from goo. Connected my nexus, installed drivers and software downloaded some ROMS (I believe). I did 2 backups, one with system apps and data and another with system apps + data, shared data not checked. Am I right in thinking that once I root unlock and root (everything is erased) and I flash with aokp and gapps, I can use NRT to restore my apps and data? Also lets say for some reason I want to revert to factory defaults unroot and locked, I see the app has the feature to do so. That feature will install the old unrooted/loced ROM (sorry if i am getting my terminology mixed here) in which then I could just run a restore of apps from the backup i created and it would be back to "normal"? Appreciate all the help and advice, just want to make sure im taking all step where when i root/unlock or go back, restoring apps and data is easy?

Thanks

Yes, everything gets erased when you unlock but you only have to unlock one time unless you specifically tell it to relock again. You'll never NEED to relock the bootloader unless you want to return it for some reason.
I can't speak to using NRT to do a restore. In theory the answer is yes but that doesn't mean you won't run into a problem.

I know you can use WUGs toolkit to completely restore the device to stock and re-lock if you want to. I don't use NRT so I don't know if that works that way.
The restore uses the stock images from Google. So it's not technically a ROM, it's more than that.
I'm not sure restoring apps back to a relocked N7 will work, never done that.

The general advice is always to unlock the bootloader early, even when you aren't going to root. It's really easy to root later, do an app back with like Titanium Backup without having to wipe everything. It's the locking-relocking process that causes most of these issues. Google, for security reasons, flattens your personal data when you unlock because it prevents people from stealing your phone and getting access to personal stuff after unlocking. So to answer the question, just don't relock and this whole mess goes away. You can backup with TiBu, copy the backups to a computer or Dropbox and then pull them back down and restore pretty easily.
