Random spam in the middle of texting with contacts

Starting this morning, when I'm texting with contacts I will get a random spam text in the middle of the text conversation and it is not being sent by my contact. Has anyone else experienced this or know why its happening and how to stop it?

Sign up for the do not call list in case it came from outside your phone. Also some apps have pop-up advertisements even if you are not in the app... There is an app for that which will tell you what other apps are doing these popups so you can just uninstall them - but I forgot the name of it...!

So you are in the middle of a text conversation with, say, Bob and all of a sudden in the same thread there is a spam text that isn't from Bob? Does it show up in the conversation thread? If so, how can you tell it isn't from Bob? I'm not trying to interrogate you, just would like a better explanation to try and figure out what is happening.

What texting app are you using? Is there a free and paid version? Sometimes the free version has ads.
