Randomly deleting all my text messages?

i have close to 1500 texts on my phone and this never has happened to me, stock or rooted. I use handcent sms.

yepppp, all my texts deleted..

I've only had my ego for two weeks and the keyboard is super super slow (lags.. a lot) and this this morning I wake up appaerntly all my texts are gone.. no I didn't use this tiger woods app or stock deal. My evo really sucks already.. hasn't even been amonth. And all the typos on here is because my phone won't let me change it.

This problem has nothing to do with memory or storage and I don't think any of you are doing anything wrong.
I have my text limit at 500 messages per thread. not all together. My phone uses a 16G memory card for text storage and I had not reached that limit in any thread and this is the second time it has deleted every single one of my threads.
I'm on the Epic and this is the only problem I've had with the phone, otherwise I love it. Hopefully this is just a glitch that will be fixed in an update, I can't afford to keep losing important messages like this

Its happened to me two times

I have sprint Evo 4g
First time it happened to me was in the middle of the night. I was not even touching my phone. Woke up and all text were gone.
Second time was shortly after i woke up this morning (about a month later). No clue why. I was carrying my phone. It looked like i had opened a message and it was loading (little circle spinning and it said loading). I was carrying it unlocked so i thought i hit something. Pushed the back button and boom all messages were gone. No force close or anything.
I too have many important messages but i have been using sms backup every few days to make sure i don't loose them.

I was pushing 6500 texts the first time and 7000 the second time. I have virus protection installed so i'm going to try uninstalling that to see if it fixes the problem. I only use it to track my phone in an emergency. It happened for the first time shortly after i installed the virus protection (lookout).

This is not user error or a limit setting issue. I guess having A LOT of text could be overwhelming the sms app causing an error to occur which corrupts the message database. I base this thought on the fact that the app is noticeably faster when all messages are gone. AND if i look at where the sms database if stored using root explorer i think its still there.
Luckily my last sms backup was last night so i didn't loose anything this time except a few unimportant ones. I'm not going to restore my messages from my backup to see if it will happen again with less messages.

Hello,

My Droid has done the same exact thing numerous times. It did it on thursday and just did it again today. I set the max messages to 5000 also but that doesn't help. I would try to take it into verizon but I HATE any verizon store in Ohio. They don't help with anything and I do not have the rip-off insurance on my phone. Does anyone know if there is a recall or a possibility of getting phones with this 'bug' replaced?

Thanks,
Eric

I was just browsing because my android just did the exact same thing, I dont care about all the messages being gone really. (Okay so maybe I do if I am posting here, right?) But this is the second time it has happened to me and I am not too please (Like most of you) Both times my phone has been idle, no lights come on to notify me it is doing something or anything. My settings are default (No limit on inbox messages or anything) I have come to the conclusion though it seems to be mainly a verizon issue. I'm really missing my RAZR right about now. Nothing volatile about that phone.

I only keep my max messages at 40 each thread and this had never happened to me the whole time I've had this phone from 2.2 to 2.3.4

Yepp... this has happened to me twice this week on my motorola droid 1.. very good phone never had a problem until this. Makes me real sad, have another year until I can get a new phone.

Exactly.. love my moto droid, hate losing messages

This happened to me two months ago and it happened again just a few minutes ago, I wasn't even touching my phone. It was sitting next to me and when I picked it up to check my messages, suddenly they were all gone. I sent a message to myself to see if the horror that it had happened again was true, and it was.

It did this about two months ago, too. I had way less messages then, though. Granted, I had a lot of messages as of tonight, but that doesn't make sense as to why it did it two months ago with way less and now randomly does it when I don't even have anything going on with it?

It's extremely infuriating and I'm currently on the phone with customer service.

I'm really hoping for some magic fix to bring my messages back.

Install SMS Backup & Restore Pro. Set it to automatically save & restore. I have backups to release day of the Droid....Wont help if all old messages are gone, but may prevent future texts from being deleted...

A few weeks ago I purchased a Samsung Galaxy Note 4, and exchanged it for an identical phone after 7 days of it randomly deleting my text messages received. Much to my dismay, after a week and a half, my new Galaxy Note 4 has come down with the same, maddening illness. I never knew I could have such an insecure relationship with a phone.

This is usually a setting in the Messages app that is told to "Delete old messages".. if you text a bajillion people/times, it's going to purge the old ones to keep down the size of the message database.

New text messages. New text messages randomly deleted. I haven't had the phone long enough to text a "bajillion".

Boy oh boy. If i just could get 1 penny for everyone whos had wonderful experiences with no random backspace delete with their android... or iPhones- i'd be in the monies honies. It's been 9 years since the OP. Lol. Go figure. That's darn near 9 years ive put up with this BS. The comments everyone throws in... such as what the the hell am i talking about, the comments saying absurd things like idk... down the pipe scratch that put away pipe, i'm sure i know what that means although i won't say i know much more about it- than that.
Understand y'all, just bc you don't exp smthn on your device doesn't mean it can't be happening to others. Bc i promise these days esp, skys the limit.
Now to the OP, I can only share my own esp and other various things I've noticed- kind of like in a way making the prime environment and most likely time for this rbd(random back space delete). From my own personal experiences (and believe this ive lost countless innumerable important (at that time- at least) messages texting, emails, personal notes to self, journal entries... you name or i hundreds it not maybe a thousand. Ive built a list of very basic and common denominators here. Again this is my own experience, and they're could be a plethora of variables in each case-

1. I've been using android or smart phone lol since the release of G1. The Google phone att through tmobile. It had that slide under keyboard I went through many more phones when I landed on the Note 2 I believe I got addicted to the stylist. Not a universal stylus but Samsung specific. And for each note phone released, would be device specific. Course i had tons of replacements. I can't believe i'm still using the note, but i love that pen for photo edits etc. However, that might be part of where RBD begins. These days, i try not use the pen for anything other then necessary projects. But if i start using the spen- in a snap it's RBD and everything i wrote ...POOF JUST GONE. THE ONLY thing that can help to a certain degree is if notice and can move quick enough to stop the movement of the cursor deleting character and then of course word by word as though you were doing this yourself. What you have to do EXIT IMMEDIATELY FROM THAT SCREEN and that stops the cursor from continued progression in deleting your writing. Jesus seems like early note device but for sure i know note 4 and on esp 4 and 5 were a serious issue with RBD. Which is when everyone chopped me for trying to explain the situation. Seriously i was the only person in the world who this- happened to. I never ran across anyone else's similar issue. Anywhere. Noteworthy-Three nuclear family members chose iPhones duly noted they never had this problem. To now- even. However, another factor imo- it .. had to back out just then cuz just like always RBD. It's so bloody frustrating too. Back to topic it seems to be MOSTLY BUT NOT ALWAYS(just then prime example) the input method imo is also a factor! Combine you swipe method with your S Pen use and that is disaster waiting to happen I'm not using my stylus pen right now I'm just using my fingertip but I am using Swype and it just happened to me and I lost several lines. In the past I've also believed that there's a series of characters that I'm swiping that particular combination of characters, and then swipe close to back button- lol. That's a wrap on your text. Unless you can exit in less than a second it's gone. If you look away, GONE. I really really wish i could get like- a go pro to attach on to me so eventually i could capture this.... defect. IT'S NOT a phenomenon, it's nothing friggin paranormal either. It is a defect or a basic malfunction with the device. Perhaps a certain combo of numbers letters are a type of glitchy- unknown silent command. When it happened on my 3rd note i knew it wasn't me nor was it that particular device. This didn't ever happen with any of my galaxy phones, just these note phones. WTH. But it was the one i waiting anxiously and patiently and was thoroughly excited alot- my brand new note 8. Very disappointing hadn't had it even a month and then i'm texting one day, all the sudden... poof message I WS in shock i sat here before i could even pull myself together my text was gone forever. Im still upset about, i'm thinking this device cost me more than one thousand dollars- and it just deleted my text message. My carrier doesn't give a flip they act like they have no clue what i'm talking about, so here i went again- no help FROM THE PEOPLE I PURCHASED THE DEVICE FROM. The carrier ive used for 10+yrs now. It's very troubling, i don't want a1000$ that's screwing up a lot. For that cost it shouldn't hardly ever screw up. LOL I SAID SCREW UP and it just did. Omg-
Okay second and last time.
I gotta run before it does that again it infuriates me almost! Lol. Idk. Best advice i have for anyone who s got the malfunction on their device, when typing something lengthy in order to keep that information you need to at various times you need to "select all' and "copy" "select all" and "copy" that's the only thing going to help you buut don't forget you need to every few lines, because when your message is gone. It'll be gone for good. You cannot tap undo and BOOM there-
It is. There's no undo on android. I sure wish there was. But then apple doesn't have your clipboard either. Ive had ipad since ipad 1, in all the years, never one- RBD. but the input is different. I a hunt and peck typist. Lol. No swipe method though.
Also just a lil smthn to make droid lovers feel not so dreadful- apple doesn't have clipboard but if you use it little times to insure text loss then it will take up your board. Just food for thought in case there's something important on your clipboard, you'll need to do something else with it. I hope smthn here might help someone. Like i mentioned it's been many years ive dealt

Okay i'm getting nervous. That was a close call luckily i had copied this message a moment ago cuz i looked away and THIS ENTIRE NOVEL ...POOF GONE. Just now. Like that took only seconds. I just took a drink of my DP. OMG.
I'll check back if anyone has anything to offer advice or knowledge or answers or questions- whatever- feel free.
Good day
The key
Select all
Copy
every few lines!
