RANT: Nexus "the developers phone" and updates argument

You had 30 days to return it if it wasn't your cup of tea. Not sure what good is a rant after the fact. Also, please name a single phone that is without glitches. And don't even mention the iPhone because I can post a wall of text describing its issues.

Who complained about the phone? <looks around> <crickets>

Excuses, that what it was about. Stupid ones.

I'm just wondering what doesn't work for you guys. My phone works perfectly. ICS is smoother, more intuitive, more featured, cleaner, and just all around better than any gingerbread OS I ever ran. Its a developer phone so developers can develop on it. It doesn't mean every OS issued to it will be a beta. I have honestly never read a more ridiculous OP. And then for people to agree with him is even more insane to me.

I'm really hoping I have a good experance with the nexus ordered today will have it wednesday. All these posts have me scared tho lol. But I'm sure its a great phone can't wait to get it. Giving the razr to my girl. I think people need to quit talking trash about the phone because just like any phones they will all have there problems. Razr is not perfect rezound is not perfect no phone is or will be enjoy what u have

Why? You dont buy a used car when you want it .... just runs... right? Or a HD, or a printer, or a TV, or an MP3 player ... anything for that matter. My rant was about: using "developer" excuse, and you just used it again. :-\

You didn't read carefully enough. He specifically said that it being a developer phone had nothing to do with it.

Oh, and four out of those five things you named also have bugs and receive updates to fix them. ;)

Pardon me, but <gasp> how does the iPhone was developed and tested? If the fruity people can develop, test, and release a product - then it can be done.

Again, I dont understand why the notion of being beta testers is so widely and easily accepted.

Because people that buy stock android phones on new releases usually understand that what they're buying may not be bug free yet.

Oh, and you think Apple doesn't release buggy products? Even a company as meticulous and detail-oriented as Apple still releases buggy products. Because their OS development is closed, however, they choose not to show all of their cards when betas are released to the dev community.

Who complained about the phone? <looks around> <crickets>

So if no one is complaining, what's the point of the RANT? Obviously there IS a complaint? Get it? And please I won't stoop to your level and call you a name even though you deserve it. Regardless of who it is, if the phone isn't living up to your standards, take it back.

Also, the energy it took to whine for no good reason, one could put towards asking intelligent questions that might actually lead to a solution.

I'm out, I agree, thread should not only be locked but deleted.

Hi all,

first off, I got the GNex on it's release day, a very happy owner, have no issues with the phone, havent even unlocked or rooted and dont plan to, while rooted and romed all my other android phones the entire 4 years I've been using them.

I also love this forum - the amount of info is incredible and users are helpful.

BUT.

I think the arguments "nexus is a developer phone, so expect glitches" and "because it's nexus updates will be more frequent" are very weak, to put it politely. Stupid, in MHO.

Updates - ok, given the previous history and minimal OEM involvement, might hold some wather in it but has anyone seen that anywhere in writing? Was that advertised anywhere? Sure I would love to see updates come quickly, but all who are complaining "where is an update" sound silly to me.

Updates argument is no big deal, I could care less, but the "Nexus is a developer phone, so expect glitches" is really one that I think is .... weak, poor, and stupid. Have anyone seen any advertisement for the "nexus developers phone"? Did anyone see mentioning anywhere about "still in development"? Why should I expect glitches on the product i bought IN A RETAIL STORE? It doesnt say anywhere on the box nor in the manual that glitches are expected. I did not get this phone as part of "testers" group or "developers" distribution channel. THIS PHONE IS SOLD IN REGULAR RETAIL STORES AND MUST BE TREATED AS ONE - A REGULAR RETAIL PRODUCT.

You dont expect to buy a ... cool looking and multifunctonal toaster in a regular retail store and then find out that it could burn your kitchen because ... it's a developer product.

I just dont get why everyone accepts that common notion of "developer phone". Especially I dont get how some reply with that "developer phone" crap to other users problems.

Rant done. Oh, I feel so much better. :D

as far as people saying "you shouldnt of bought a nexus if you dont like bugs etc" they need to come off of it.. they might assume this.. and others in an internet forum might agree.. but the fact is its just a phone like any other.. there isnt some disclaimer on it saying any of the sort.. do you think the average customer has any idea what you are talking about? this phone is SOLD TO ALL.. its not some backroom secret nerd phone.

And? You think your average consumer goes into a VZW looking for a Nexus? Heck, the reps at all of my local stores make it clear the Nexus isn't for everyone, even if its a great phone.

Apparently you never bought a car with new technology running under the hood. Wankel anyone?

Because Apple lets people spend $100 to get "developer" keys, then release the build to them 6 months early so they can do the same thing Google does. It ain't rocket science.

That's exactly what apple does. A lot of people don't know that..

From the best android phone PERIOD. Galaxy Nexus.

Being a dev phone has nothing to do with it. If you care that much about having a phone (or any other consumer product) without any significant problems/bugs, buy last year's model. By that time, everything has been fixed.

I think about the only thing I'd change in your statement is that everything should have been fixed.

AGAIN. It is a phone running a .0 release of a NEW version of the OS .. it's not that it's a developer phone but it's a .0 and if you adopt early then one expects this type of thing .. had you bought one a month from now or two months from now .. and STILL had cause to say this .. then I'd just think you were cracked. :D

The worst term in the industry right now is "developer phone" because everyone seems to use it wrong.

It's not a beta phone or something where you get unprecedented amount of problems that get fixed fast.

It's for people (like me and maybe you) who write applications for Android phones to use. We develop our applications on the phone with the idea that it will work across Android. If you've ever used the emulator vs using a phone in (USB) debugging mode, you'd know exactly why developers would want the phone. In the emulator, a phone may get 4-5 fps testing a game that on a phone may get 30 fps.

The point of the Nexus is to provide developers a baseline for testing Apps. That's what it means to be a "developer phone". Owning one gives you a certain amount of guarantees (or should) that Apps will work without problems. However, there are some Apps (games mostly) that use native code that prevent this from being 100% true (this is what fragmentation is).

Let me say this another way. The iPhone 4S is a developer phone. You don't hear people complaining about it. Why? Because it's stupid.

Since when did the claim of having the latest updates translate to update fast? The phone has been out 1 month and some change and people are hollering where's the update?! What I think having a Nexus device means is having updates first and faster than it would take to get it with a device where the update has to go through the OEM and then the carrier.

A Nexus remains the best device to get updates the fastest. That's just true. What was the first phone to get it's port "officially" of Android 4.0? The Nexus S (yes I know it has since been pulled, but rest assured the Nexus S will still be officially supported before any other phone gets the update). What was the first phone to get Froyo? The Nexus One. I'm pretty sure the Nexus One was the first phone to get Gingerbread after the Nexus S release, but I could be wrong about that.

It's just a simple fact of the matter that the Nexus devices will see the updates faster than other phones. And to some people, that is a good reason to own the phone and it is a good reason to keep the phone in spite of other issues they may have. No phone is perfect and everyone has their reasons for why they choose the phone they choose despite it's flaws.

Every toaster I have ever bought has turned on me at some point during the time it's had permission to reside in my house.....which leads me to believe toasters are, or at least should be, a developer product. Now my G-Nex has not turned on me......yet.....so I am ok with anyone and or everyone considering It a developers phone as long as they strive to improve the product. Now as far as toasters are concerned...........

If I had a toaster that frequently failed to do its primary function and required I unplug it for a bit to get it to work again, I'd go find a different toaster! :p
