Reading text messages automatically via bluetooth

OK. I'm a recent convert, having carried a Nokia 1520 for some time. I switched because many of the apps that I needed didn't look like they'd ever come to Windows Phone. That said, one of the functions I'm finding I'm desperately missing now is killing me.

When I was driving anywhere and someone would send me a text message on Windows Phone, it would automatically trigger my car bluetooth (or headset) and say: "Incoming text message from XYZ, read it or ignore" then I could tell it read it, after it read it aloud, I could say "reply" and voice to text a response.

This was instant.

I have the Note5, and some google results turned up Assist, but that seems to be a motorola only app. I've googled other threads and nothing really for sure.. I'm glad I have the other apps, but has anything come along on this.. as right now, AT&T's stupid "Drive" function (which I ended up disabling as it is killing battery and is also seemingly dropping out calls/etc) doesn't work, I'd rather messages pile up then this auto-lock response BS

I use the app Agent. It is almost an exact duplicate of Moto Assist. Works very well.

Ok. I tried A2DP based on one recommendation. It did read text over bluetooth (pro). Con: It didn't ask me if I wanted it read, it read them automatically, and it didn't ever prompt me to see if I wanted to reply via voice.

This is a real difference here; because with Wp8, that was a lock.. it would just say:

"Incoming text from XYZ, read it or ignore"
You'd respond read it, then it'd read it
then:
Reply?

But on this, it just instantly reads it and doesn't give me the option to reply, also doesn't give me the option to ignore.

This is kind of important because I don't need texts from things like:

AT&T Messaging Notice: Thanks for your purchase of a new AT&T phone, if you'd like to blah blah blah"

I looked at ReadItToMe, but it looked like it hadn't been updated in 2 years and I saw some mixed thoughts on that. But this is a pretty important function for me, I drive about 3-4 hours a day

It's been a while since I tried, but S-Voice could do this and it's built in. My problem with S-voice in the past is that it couldn't automatically get past the device lock and I wasn't going to look away to unlock my phone while driving.

Just saw this post, I'm the dev of ReadItToMe which as mentioned above hadn't been updated in 2 years however I'm about to push a massive update which might be of interest to you guys. Reads sms, incoming callers and app notifications, this update adds Voice Reply for apps like Whatsapp, Hangouts, Gmail etc (previous version already did SMS) and a bunch of other features to setup when it runs.

It's currently in a staged rollout (50%) so it's 50/50 atm if the version you find on the Play Store is the newest, otherwise it'll be fully rolled out by Weds if anyone is interested

Funny, I came from 1520 and this is one feature I miss too. It's handy while driving working out etc... Will try updated app on Wednesday.

That's awesome--thanks for jumping into the thread!

No worries :) I'm always around in the community, mostly on a certain other forum which shall remain nameless haha but I'm happy to help where I can

FYI I've just pushed 100% rollout so it should be available for anyone in a couple of hours. Any issues, thoughts, comments etc I'm all ears :D

I downloaded Readittome but I'm having a problem with buying the pro version. The last updates were done on this product two years ago. I'm not keen on buying the pro version only to have it abandoned again. What surety do we have that this will become an updated and maintained product for future phones and versions of android?

The Pro version is now redundant. If you're on the latest update (material design, profiles etc) then you want to be looking at the in app purchase if you'd like to support the app and take advantage of the paid features.

As to surety, I work on my personal apps in my spare time so while I can't promise new features regularly I can say the app will be maintained for future versions of Android.
In fact the reason it hadn't been updated in 2 years was that it did exactly what I wanted it too very well, and it's only recently with the emergence of smartwatches (which triggered ReadItToMe as they are bluetooth) that I decided to update it, including adding quick reply which has also only become possible in the last 6 months or so. The actual reason I went for a complete rewrite was specifically to make it much easier for me to maintain as Android evolves.

That being said, I always say to purchase and support an app based on it's current merits, and not what you expect from it in the future as nothing is guaranteed.. Also in this case you have a 2 week trial (from today's update) of all the paid features so there's no rush to decide :)

Kudos to you--you're one of the good devs!

I purchased it for a whopping $3.00. I will likely never use it as I prefer SVoice, but the cost of supporting android app devs is dirt cheap. And this helps continue the tradition of "if you want to do it on Android there is an app for it". From just giving it a test drive it is a well designed and easy to use app that provides a great service for those who want or need it. $3.00, man you can't buy a decent cup of coffee for that money.

Thanks for the reply Crazy-fool it is appreciated. I will make the purchase in the next few days on order to support your efforts even though I don't text much at all, but it will be handy if a text is received while driving.

Much appreciated :) You guys are what makes the Android community so great!

I came from a L1520 to a Samsung phone and IMHO S-Voice is vastly inferior to Cortana over Bluetooth on WP. It's one big thing that still makes me swap Sims while in the car or when using headphones. Going to try Read it to Me. Also OK Google doesn't operate over Bluetooth in our vehicles whereas Cortana can be easily invoked with the Hey Cortana or by dialing the contact number.

This would all be excellent feedback to give Google--hopefully they can work on bringing these features in future updates!

I'm in the same boat as you...jumping the Windows Phone ship from LUMIA ICON to Note 5 (because so tired of waiting on something to happen with Windows Phone) and I totally miss this. I did install Cortana and while she is more useful than expected on my Note 5, it doesn't do this...
