Real data speed comparison: Verizon vs. T-Mobile

I left VZW for T-Mobile earlier this year and don't regret it. T-Mobile has actually been expanding LTE coverage into rural areas faster than any other carrier has. T-Mobile's LTE network is ridiculously fast compared to Verizon's in my experience. Just because you have a lot of coverage doesn't mean it's the best or fastest.

For me the fastest so far is Verizon with 64mbps .
Verizon :64mbps
AT&T: 53mbps
Sprint :N/A
T-mobile: 38mbps


Of course these are based off where I live and time but speeds will vary per area and time

I left Verizon for AT&T because the faint signal I had in my NYC apartment and in my office simply disappeared and they gave me nothing but promises for over a month. AT&T had a similar weak signal at home and at work here in Manhattan and dealing with that finicky microcell became a pain. One day, at work in the Financial District, I noticed a coworker had a T Mobile phone and I saw he had a full strength signal when I had nothing. Walked to the T Mobile store that day and switched. Providers can make all kinds of claims as to the extent of their networks, but it doesn't necessarily translate to real world usage.

I'm still on an HSPA+ device and it's always seemed sufficiently fast, so I'm looking forward to having my socks blown off when I finally upgrade to LTE.

I dunno, it's kind of like every new technology: what we had before was perfectly fine, but as soon as we upgrade we're spoiled and suddenly nothing less will do.

LTE is nice and all but HSPA + is fine in t-mobile whenever I had full service and no LTE . Nothing like going from Verizon 3G to LTE

When I was on Verizon I don't remember what they're speeds were at that time. On T-Mobile, the fastest speed test I've done was 61mbps. In my area and surrounding areas I average from 30mbps to 60mbps. In T-Mobile's wideband LTE markets (T-Mobile's wideband LTE is Verizon's XLTE) people have gotten speeds in excess of 100mbps. I have yet to reach 100mbps in LA's wideband LTE market.

I know OP is testing the same phone, but the choice of phone makes a difference as well. On an iPhone 5s and a Nexus 5, I see 50Mbps at my house, while with my Moto X 2014 I get 78Mbps.

Motorola is known to make the best radio antennas. Which is probably why your Moto X has higher speeds.

I recently switched from Verizon to T-Mobile, and everywhere I go, the reception and bandwidth tops what I had with Verizon, even with an XLTE device. Im currenly using a Verizon Note 3 on tmobile.

Yeah if T-Mobile has coverage where you live it usually is pretty good. Of course it varies but .. I have no complaints .

When Verizon LTE was new in our area - about 4 years ago, the speeds were way up there. Now I average around 15 down.
In these same out and about places in my daily travels, T-Mobile is averaging me 30 down.
