Hello all,
Like many of you android fans here I have been anxiously waiting to get my hand on the new Google pixel. I have been lurking around this forum reading about this phone for the last few days. I finally pull the trigger and ordered the Black Pixel with a clear case. I'm interested in the camera but have not found much info or review on it except DxO and the 100+ professional pictures. I want to see some real life pictures and I have found these two new videos that compared the Pixel to the iphone 7 and the Pixel to the galaxy S7 edge. To me there's no clear winner here so what do you guys think? Will Pixel camera live up to it's hype?

According to some around here, DXO Mark says it's the best so it's the best, regardless of the results everyone else gets with the Pixel camera.

To my eyes, the iPhone wins against pixel by a large large margin. Especially in colors and detail.

The s7 edge and pixel portray almost same kinds of colors. But again, the detail isn't there in Pixel photos.

I had been waiting for some real life examples too. And watching this left me pretty disappointed in the Pixel. But honestly I wasn't expecting anything better.

A camera which needs to use DXO rating to wow the consumers is no good camera to begin with.

As far the videos themselves, the Pixel shots seem to suffer from lack of OIS. The Pixel images are often soft/lacking detail in the images

These pics mean nothing without knowing what pics show the most true to life colors. We need the photographer to tell us which one most accurately shows the colors and scene more accurately,

You are absolutely right but what about details? I have gone back and viewed the videos on my PC instead of my phone and man, Pixel picture details are not as good as the iphone 7. I am a little disappointed since this is one of the main reasons why I am jumping on this phone. I can go without water proof or SD cards but at this price, the camera needs to be as good or better than other flagships.

Aside from a million other factors that make camera comparisons difficult to show a true sense of a phones strengths and weaknesses

A compressed youtube video of still images is high on the list of useless comparisons.

You may be able to gauge some sharpness and details/color differences but in reality theres a lot of factors with video compression that make these types of comparisons unusable. I'm not sure why people bother.

That's why I was waiting for reviews. If you are simply relying on DXO to praise the camera, I don't put much into that. Pixel looks ok, but not iPhone level which is to be expected with a google device, since they still aren't iPhone level with their camera software.

^^^^ This.

While it is pretty clear the S7 is way over-sharpened (that is what they've being doing since the S5), YouTube is hardly a medium for accurate comparison of stills or video quality.

As an avid photographer, I have found DXO to be pretty well aligned with reality. I have used it as a significant factor in choosing camera bodies and lenses and have been pretty happy with the choices made based on it.

Their track record with smartphones isn't the best

As mentioned previously, it's subjective. And it should not be your sole criteria, but I prefer the less over processed look based on what I've seen so far. But we won't really know until we get it in our hot little hands.

I wait for users to start posting their own candid shots before I judge the camera on a phone to hard. While review sites may give you a good idea, how a camera performs outside of a testing environment is more important than anything else. You can make most modern camera sensors look damn good in a perfect scenario, but take it out in the world and it may fall flat on its face in a real candid scenario.

If you were happy with the 5X and 6P camera, you'll be happy with the Pixel. It is not too complicated. It is a slightly upgraded version of the same camera in both hardware and software.

My wife prefers the pictures from the Nexus 6P to that of her iPhone 6S. My only real complaint with the 6P camera is how slow it can be, and how long it takes to process HDR photos. Sounds like the pixel fixes that and improves on the quality, so I'll be happy with it, as will my wife as she is now getting a Pixel.

I don't trust the DxO rating. I'm currently using the Sony Xperia Z5 and DxO rating was 87 if I remember it correctly but the camera is no where as good as my old galaxy s6 edge plus and the lag was horrible. So I was set on switching to the note 7 but we all know how that went. I don't have a lot of choices after the note 7 fiasco. I really don't want to go with the iPhone route so this is why I'm here. I am hoping that DxO is right this time.
