Really old maps on google maps?

I just got my first android and I checked out the loaded google maps app and although it seems to work well, the maps are from a good 7 years ago. How can I update that? My friend was comparing with his google maps on ios and they were updated.

I can. It appears to be updated if that's what you were going to ask, it's on auto update.

is having 7 year old maps in street view on google maps normal? i mean when i go onto google maps on my PC they are from june 2012 and then on my phone the maps are about 5 years older than that.

I would not guess that Google could update Street View every year, especially in rural areas. Seems to be hit or miss as to how current the views are. Mapping in general is up to 2 years behind.

This was satellite view. I just realized street view is much more current. Which seems weird, I would have thought it'd be the opposite.
