I guess this is a good step maybe should of done a little more? I guess since its just the battery if they did any marking on the outside of the device they would have had to start manufacturing all new pieces.

Spoke with Samsung about New Replacements coming out. They said on or before September 21st will be in stores. I asked what cosmetic or branding differences are there to tell the difference between exploding ones and the new "safe" phones. I explained that I travel and if I am boarding plane they see a Note 7 how will they know it is the "safe replacement" one. He said Samsung will be announcing to airlines that phones are safe to fly now. Explained if I was airline they would need to see cosmetic or some branding on the new phone showing something like Note 7 "S" branded to differentiate having a safe phone to get on board. He never committed stating any cosmetic differences!
Wow- I said if they do not allow me on board, I do not want to have the decision of not flying or leaving a $1000 phone back.
Can anyone confirm that there will be a visual branding to distinguish the good from the bad????
If not what are they thinking?

Oh GOODY!!! Something NEW to second guess Samsung on!

Well, as wildcard showed, perhaps showing the green battery indicator and also showing the icon in the power menu may help.

And at least in some countries, ones on the recall list will be limited to a 60% charge.

If you're a frequent flier I would return the Note 7 for a while. Also the previous comment is correct, the official recall is the official ban on flights. It's already clearly written somewhere in the middle of the thousands/millions of pages of CFRs, that's good enough for them. The FAA isn't going to issue a statement restating an existing rule and how it applies to this one recalled item.

The issue is in a month when everyone has a new device but no one knows wtf is going on. You take off on your international flight and the passenger next to you says something to the flight attendant and now you're asked to either turn off your phone and enjoy Skymall magazine for 8 hours or risk a felony. They don't have time to read the 900 memos they get every week, won't give a crap about the color of the battery indicator and they don't have time to argue with you about it. And the captain, who is old enough to be your grandpa, doesn't have a clue what a galaxy 7 is and isn't going to be bothered with a long discussion with the flight attendant about you.

Here's what the flight crews know:

1) Note 7s have to be powered off during flight.
2) Officially recalled items cant be brought on board

What they *might* know if they follow the news:

1) New Note 7s are being issued
2) The Note 7 was officially recalled

There's a lot of places for knowledge to break down. At a minimum I would bring another device with you to use during flight.

I picked up my replacement yesterday and there are NO visual cues to indicate that I have a model that differs than the previous ones. It is just a brand new Note 7. I checked the IMEI and it showed that it was not impacted.

I am a bit concerned, I have a replacement N7 (It came up as good on the IMEI checker) I am on AT&T but I don't have the green indicators nor have I received the software update that is said to add this only to the new safe devices. based on what's been posted, it seems like the N7 could remain unusable on domestic US flights for now.

Cheers,
BR

Have you checked with AT&T about the update?

Won't be another 2 weeks before the black is back in stock.

I now have the update on my AT&T N7, it ran at 00:30 this morning (I do not believe it asked permission to install because i got logged on my phone in time to se the screen message for a second before it rebooted) it's possible i somehow hit an "Ok" prompt to allow the install but it seems unlikely. That said, I don't have a problem with the update but I want to be aware of these things.

Cheers,
BR
