I am buying my daughter her first phone. Should I get a refurbished Pixel (1st Gen) or brand new cheap phone like a Moto G5/6?

I usually say the current midranger but in the case, I'd take a $200 Pixel (woot.com).

I've had my pixel XL since day one. Still buttery smooth like the day I got it.

I did not jump on the pixel 2, and not sure if I would jump to a pixel 3.

This phone is AMAZING

As long as they actually did a proper referb, a Pixel for $200 absolutely slays anything even remotely close to that price. And since Google bumped the update window to 3 years, it's fully supported until the end of 2019.

This has been my fear with a refurbished Pixel is whether the quality is good. When I read the reviews for Google certified refurbished pixels it gives me the impression that they are heavily used units that got traded in for some reason. But as long as the screen isn't scratched up I figure it could still be a good buy.

Thanks for the replies!

LeoRex - Are you talking security patches or full software updates through end of 2019? My understanding is that only Pixel 2's have 3 years of OS updates. OG Pixel has only 2 years, meaning Android P later this year is it.

Right, Pixel 2 got the full three... Pixel only gets P, then security and bug fixes until late 2019.

Still, it'll get P the day it gets released and be updated with the important stuff for another year... That is better than some phones that were just released.
