Renaming Files with ES FIle Explorer not working?

I'm new to android and especially to what I'm trying to do. I've found a thread that showed which files to rename by adding .bak to the filename in order to prevent the OTA update. So I have ES File Explorer installed, but when I long press on one of the files and then rename it after hitting OK the file still shows the original file name.

Am I missing something?

There are two versions of ES explorer. V1.5 "Cupcake", and V3. Make sure you are using V3. Further more, once renamed, you may have to refresh the view to see the actual change. On top of that, the renaming can only be successful if the file you want to rename is unused at the time of renaming. Depending on your phone's "busyness", it could take a second or two for the refresh to work. Prior to making big file operations in system folders, it is wise to go into the control app, and force stop everything running that doesn't need to run in the "downloaded apps" section. Doing so will make your handset a lot more zippy for these operations.

That said, I haven't had any file renaming failures so far, so I cannot say whether the system warns you of such failure, or if it simply reverts the name quietly without notice. Good luck.

I do have V3.0 installed. I am trying to rename /system/data/FWUpdate.apk to FWUpdate.apk.bak. However it doesn't seem to do this. It acts like it is renaming the file, but after refresh it still just shows .apk. It doesn't give any warning or anything.

And I don't have hardly anything running.

Do I need to be rooted for this? I'm not and the ES File Explorer shows that the file is Read/Writeable.

Yes, you must be rooted to be able to fiddle with files in /system
What build is your phone currently on - MB1? Verizon seems to have worked the kinks out in MF1, so it's safe to update.

Yeah, I just wanted to stop the OTA...I've been hearing MF1 is OK, but I'll probably wait a bit longer just to be sure...I'm extremely happy with MB1, especially with battery life (currently at 27hrs with 43% left) and 4g connectivity/speeds (25MB down).

I also only have a Mac at home, and it sounds like support for Mac's in regards to rooting is much less than that for windows....not that I'd do anything other than stop the OTA.

Well, I dont know if these handle the OS per se, but one way to get your APKs backed up so you don't have to use an updated version is using these: APK Extractor and APK Fetcher/Extractor.

When one gets an early app, sometimes the DEV has not had the time to insert the advertisement banner push thingy, and I know it's nice to keep those add-free apps.... I migrated a few apps like this from my old phone.

Okay, if you're using ES File Explorer, you need to mount the file system read-write (r/w), since it's normally mounted read-only and you can't rename, move, or delete files at all.

1. Touch the lower left menu key.

2. Tap "Root Explorer"

3. Use "Mount R/W" menu.

There's several things in the "Root Explorer" menu that you may find useful. But be really careful, since you can really damage your phone (and cost yourself a lot of time) playing around as root.

I'm using Root Explorer to browse my files. I have a similar problem, but when I rename my files on my rooted Alcatel Fierce, they disappear FOREVER! Anyone have any experience with renaming files using this app? Any insight about how to find or recover these lost files?
(I deleted home\data\misc\wifi\wpa_supplicant.config) <--- ...aaaaaaannnnd now the wifi doesn't work :0/
