Repairing the charging port: HTC or elsewhere?

So it appears that this problem is exceedingly common... My charging port started by just charging slowly, then gradually got worse and worse until now I have to fight with it for several minutes to get the contacts lined up JUST RIGHT to get it charging. Of course, it's out of warranty. I've seen videos online of how to replace the charging port, so I assume this is a doable fix, but not one that I particularly want to take on.

Has anyone sent their phone in for repairs to HTC? What were you experiences? (So far I've only seen negative reviews online.)

Should I just take it to a local cell phone repair store instead? (And by "local" I mean "two hours away", but that's still within driving distance at least.)

Just want to suggest you to try another cable before sending it to repair

Speaking from personal experience, I suggest you just move on to another phone.

As I've mentioned in other threads, my first M8 was replaced under warranty roulette. The one I got back had the port go bad quicker than the first. That one was out of warranty, so I called HTC for a quote. They couldn't quote me for that specific repair, only that the average repair, regardless of the issue, is US$140. I took it to a local shop, who tried replacing it.

According to them, the first replacement port assembly was DOA. They tried a second one, which they said didn't work either. At that point I just took the phone back. Thankfully they didn't charge me, plus they refunded my deposit on the part. I'm not 100% sure they actually tried a new port. I can tell the phone was apart at one point with them, and they let me keep a new battery they installed (part of my original order for unrelated reasons) since my original had gone dead. But beyond that, I couldn't watch the actual repair. I wasn't out any money, so I'm not worrying much about it.

While deciding what to do next, I started seeing a lot of other people having the same issues. I decided to just cut my losses and move on. That's pretty much what I've been recommending others with port problems do as well. Even if you get it fixed, you may as well expect it to go bad again.
