restored backup no good

Hello all. I flashed a nightly on my xoom and wasn't happy with the results. I then restored the backup I had just made and it was like a fresh rom. my data was still there (file manager) but all apps and accounts etc were gone. like first boot. This has now happened to me with both cwm and twrp. Any ideas?
