[Retired ROM] Aphrodite 1.3.3 (stable w/Xionia 005) (01apr11)

As for Aphrodite,
Most of the software in it, is either already up to date, or flat out removed and updated through the Market. There is no Twidroid, or maps, or ____ in it that needs updating. OS updates aren't likely to be frequent, and many devs will produce patches for them. I expect it won't be too long before rooted users are all on 2.3 anyhow. I stuck with this because it simply works. 2.3 isn't there quite yet.

I was thinking more about things like the security patch that Google made recently, for example. How would you get that using a custom ROM?

Of course we can just get app updates from the Market. I was referring specifically to the OS. And, again, I'm not asking about responsiveness; I just want to know, in principal, if I use your ROM, I have to wait for you to update it, correct? If tomorrow there's a huge flaw discovered in 2.2 and Google releases a fix, how do I get it if I'm using a customer ROM? That's what I'm asking.

Someone immediately released the Google patch in a flashable zip.

The same would happen with other patches.
It's not a big concern.

The people making this stuff aren't going to do it and leave themselves vulnerable at the same time.

...Plus Lg has now claimed no hones with less than 1000mhz cpu will get Gingerbread. If that is true (it was an official post, but could be by someone miss-informed), then we won't likely see ANY updates.
Education time!

It all started with a post on facebook:

Any ETA on when the [LG Optimus S] will get Android 2.3 Gingerbread?

LG USA Mobile on facebook said:
...the Optimus line won't be getting the Gingerbread update because they have a 600MHz processor, and the minimum requirements for Gingerbread require 1 GHz processor. In other words: it's not possible to update the processor, unfortunately.

At this point, the Android Open Source & Compatibility Tech Lead made a comment:
Dan Morrill on facebook said:
Random note: there's no hard minimum processor requirement for Gingerbread. Trust me, if there were I'd know. ;)

LG USA Mobile on facebook said:
Sorry about all the confusion everyone, in regards to the Optimus processor upgrade requirements. I jumped the gun before seeing the official CDD, LG released the following statement on their website: [see next quote]

Then LG made two posts on their website:

LG Mobile Optimus Facebook Posting

LG released information prematurely regarding the minimum processor upgrade requirements for the LG Optimus. Google recently announced the Gingerbread platform and has not yet published the Gingerbread Compatibility Definition Document (CDD) or the public branch open source code. Once the CDD and the source code is public, LG will evaluate the upgradability of the Optimus Series. We apologize for any confusion or misunderstanding. We will alert you as soon as more information on this topic is available.

Optimus One OS Upgrade

LG will upgrade all Optimus One smartphones currently using the Froyo OS to the next version of the Android OS, Gingerbread. Details of the upgrade schedule will be announced locally in due course. We sincerely apologize for the confusion and misunderstanding that was caused regarding this issue.

Also, LG's Director of Global Communications said:
Kenneth Hong said:
LG is committed to providing a clear upgrade path for owners of its Optimus smartphones. Just as we’ve confirmed an upgrade to Gingerbread for Optimus One, our expectation is to be able to offer at minimum a one-level upgrade for all Optimus smartphones introduced by LG in 2011 and beyond.

So, unless LG goes back on their word, the Optimus V will be getting Gingerbread.

And finally, we go back to facebook for the final piece of information I have on this matter:
Rohan Rao on facebook said:
when is lg optimus one getting gingerbread updatee ie. android 2.3

Life's Good (India) on facebook said:
The upgrade of LG Optimus One to android 2.3 is expected by May end & will be available in the Android market.
Life's Good (India) on facebook said:
This information is subject to change and confirmation on the upgrade is yet awaited.

Please note that the end of May ETA is not set in stone, and most importantly, it is for the Optimus One phone, not the entire Optimus One line of phones.

In conclusion, the Optimus V will be getting Gingerbread, but there is not yet an ETA for it.

Ok, so what I'm understanding is that no matter which ROM you have, you can flash an OS update, assuming someone builds it? I.e. it doesn't have to be the original ROM developer. I realize this would be the case "in general" and that, if the ROM developer customized the classes being updated, it wouldn't work.

The people making this stuff aren't going to do it and leave themselves vulnerable at the same time.

What I'm more worried about is when the ROM developer decides to stop working on it :)

Thanks for the clarification.

Thanks, I hadn't seen the retraction.
I figured it was bogus.

I still won't hold my breath on the update, at least not through VM.

Aphrodite 1.3.1 released.

This is a minor change.
Just build.prop tweaks which should increase battery life and add a bit more speed. You may notice,m you may not.

As usual, Aphrodite 1.x users can just flash this right over older versions without any problems.

haha i dont wanna seem like a pain or a pest..but i can make these so much easier for you :/

1.3.2 is up, 1.3.1 removed
I made a mistake on some of the changes (just call it a blonde moment, not that I'm blonde...). It won't hurt anything, but you won't get the full improvements in 1.3.2. Again, just flash this over.

My thanks to Mmarz for catching it.

Does removing all of this stuff really do much for space? It seems like a 10 meg difference between this and Rodimus. Even after updates the space difference doesn't seem to amount to much.

Is this due to the whole system partition thing?

Yes, make sure you do a wipe (and wipe Dalvik) before install in order to get the full amount though. I could be wrong, but 10 megs seems quite a bit low.

Thanks, LeslieAnn. I'm really liking the ROM. I have to admit I almost didn't try it out because of the name. I pictured something super girly...

Regardless, thanks a bunch. All I need to do is figure out how to actually do stuff with android besides following someone else's directions into how to root and install precooked roms.

Peace,

Steve
Brought to you from the heart of Midwest turmoil.

Yea I definitely did a wipe. Started with about 146mb free with Aphrodite and about 136-135 with Rodimus. After just putting a few of the removed apps on Aphrodite that gap closes quickly.

Thanks for the nice, stripped-down ROM, Leslie. I accomplished something similar with the Stock deodexed ROM and some manual .apk removal through ADB. It certainly didn't have any of the goodies that the Xionia kernel brings, though, so I'm sticking with this one for now.

I'm lovin' 1.3.2 :) Kudos to you LeslieAnn!

Just an observation: GPS use (Navi) seems to use significantly more current than on stock rom. On stock, I used to plug the phone into the car charger and it would still charge while using Navi. After switching to Aphrodite, it actually starts losing charge while plugged in (although very slowly). As soon as Navi is turned off, it charges normally again.

I'm not complaining, just wanted to report what I'm experiencing.

I think you've got a permanent convert, LeslieAnn! This just works so much better for me than Zefie's CM7. I miss some of the CM7 features (especially the long press on the back key to kill frozen applications) but right off the bat my proximity sensor not working during calls problem was solved. I went in to turn down the delay from 100 to 50 or so and saw you already changed it to 25. Thanks! :)

One thing I did notice though is that JuiceDefender doesn't recognize it as a kernel it can change the clockspeeds on. SetCPU and about 3 other apps I tried can change the clockspeeds though. Odd.

Have you guys been able to get dual boot to work on the Optimus V? I can't get WM7 to load under most of the other roms, but for some reason this rom allows it load for a few mins before locking up. I didn't think it would be this hard to implement. Am I just doing it wrong?

I attached my zImage. Is this the one you guy are using? It's the one without any apps. I'm trying to just load the base before I do any mods. I know, I know, Android is soooo much better, but it is still cool to test out. Can anyone help?

I'm happy you guys are enjoying it. :)

Most of the weird bugs are likely due to the kernel, which I am trying to change for 2.0.

xabbott Yeah, it goes back in fast, but there is still some that is left out. It's a matter of limited space and only so much you can remove really. If I could take out more I would.

djyellowperil
No, definately not girly :) , but thanks for reminding me, I meant to put something in the first post saying that it wasn't themed or anything.

I'm glad you tried it.

Do yourself a favor, take a rom zip, open it up and look around. My advice is start in system/app, which is where the apps are stored. You can then add/remove, save it, then flash it back. Of course you will need to disable signature verification when you go to flash it until you learn that part, which is easy, but this will at least get you experimenting. It's how I started and how Aphrodite 1.0 was born. It's evolved since then to include changes that involved editing files, but that is how I got started.

Mmarz, I had no idea we could even get Windows 7 Phone on this.
Strange. Not a surprise really, just hadn't thought about it.

Aphrodite 1.3.3 released.

I added the malware patch.
I was waiting for something more to add, but honestly, this rom works pretty good as it is.

Just flash over the old, you should have no issues.
